I don’t find it useful to debate about what design is or isn’t, or even what craft means. Who cares? Do what is necessary for the thing at hand and understand why you’re doing it. Build your personal toolbox. That’s it.

Microsoft's own research confirms something that was already pretty obvious: relying on a text generating machine to come up with answers erodes critical thinking, and is a method favoured by those who never liked doing critical thinking in the first place advait.org/files/lee_20...

Millenials are the final generation to not be internet and AI native. In fact, they grew up with frontiers. It's important for us to share the tactile and analog nature of our work so designers and engineers don't default to AI slop. Teach the craft.

Yet our apps and the platforms we use every day operate by a totally different moral and intellectual compass. While the idea of an update is fairly noble (and not always negative) — that something you’ve bought can be maintained and improved over time is a good thing — many tech platforms see it as a means to further extract and exploit, to push users into doing things that either keep them on the app longer or take more-profitable actions.

We as a society need to reckon with how this twists us up, makes us more paranoid, more judgmental, more aggressive, more reactionary, because when everything is subtly annoying, we all simmer and suffer in manifold ways. There is no digital world and physical world — they are, and have been, the same for quite some time, and reporting on tech as if this isn’t the case fails the user. It may seem a little dramatic, but take a second and really think about how many little digital irritations you deal with in a day. It’s time to wake up to the fact that our digital lives are rotten.

I’m not talking about one single product or company, but most digital experiences. The interference is everywhere, and we’ve all learned to accept conditions that are, when written out plainly, are kind of insane.

For me, the focus on so called “product discovery” recently says that the last decade of killing off UX hasn’t panned out. Having been a product leader, I think product discovery is a bandaid for good research. Also when people work in places w/no research org, their view of is research is limited.

"Public investment" vs "Wasteful Subsidy." The only problem with this clever Singer cartoon is that some people might actually not get that it’s sarcastically illustrating the perception problem, NOT telling the truth. Just in case it actually needs to be said, the truth is the opposite.
Cartoon by singer sarcastically showing that people wrongly perceive car dependent infrastructure as “public investment” (it isn’t) and investment in public transit as a “wasteful subsidy” (it isn’t, it has an excellent return on investment and actually saves public money).

One of the MOST IMPORTANT THINGS your city could do to become more healthy, sustainable, livable, affordable, equitable, successful — stop pretending to “balance” transportation modes, and commit to PRIORITIZING walking/rolling, biking, public transit. HT @dublincycling.bsky.social’s graphic
Graphic showing prioritization of pedestrians/disabled, then people on bikes, the public transport, the freight/goods movement, and then cars.

I have a bias where I don’t think you can fix a system inside out when there’s a high threshold of technical and bureaucracy. You need to start over by building a thing that replaces it side by side and slowly migrate to the new system.

Elections are like chess, strategy matters. We outnumber the right but they fall in line and all vote the same way. We on the left are independent minded and fractured. Until we have a big tent party where everyone is included and all vote the same, we’ll lose. Having a seat at the table matters.
