Seeing the same visceral reactions from #ManCity fans as did from Chelsea fans when theyn realised what had paid for success. The feeling of entitlement and betrayal. Anger focused on PL / authorities. Interesting #PR / #media dynamic (1)

@geofflemon.bsky.social am a long time listener to TFW & have always enjoyed your work across multiple channels. Very much enjoyed your unvarnished opinion on the calamity of farragiste politics and how it has bumped up against cricket in multiple ways.

Don't know whether it's because I'm a Brit of Irish heritage, or because I studied 20th Century history, or because my MA dissertation was on intelligence in COIN, with specific consideration of NI, but the seemingly collective "we are ok with uniformed groups threatening violence" worries me

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

The Bobby Sands comparison is highly amusing in various ways, and is indicative of the hole that Farage and his advisors have dug for themselves. Truly appaling #comms / #PR. As someone who's done this for challenging clients, sometimes there's only damage limitation.

Zhukov was the most consequential General Officer of WW2. Jason Isaacs played him more as Rokosovski but suspect he doesn't know that. Far less glamourous and significantly earthier - but also deeply intelligent and strategic.

The parallels with Johnson are uncanny - the greed, the thin skin, the populism, the ability to play people and the media for quite a long period of time until the other parties in the equation get bored, suspicious or start scrutinising properly. How we break the cycle is another matter entirely

Per the new @privateeyenews.bsky.social, while David Sullivan was banned from contact with the women's and youth team, Karren Brady spoke in the Lords in support of an attempt to dilute the new football regulator's fit and proper test by narrowing the scope of civil cases that could be considered.
THE BRADY HUNCH

KARREN BRADY resigned as vice-chair at West Ham United in April, it was said, to focus on other interests and her work in the House of Lords. It was impeccable timing, coming just before the club was relegated from the Premier League and its co-owner, former pornographer David "Slug" Sullivan, stepped down ahead of a Times and a Panorama investigation into serious allegations of sexually exploitative behaviour towards women (see Eye 1677).

Baroness

Brady knew Sullivan van had been banned by the Football Association from contact with the West Ham women's and youth teams due to safeguarding concerns three vears ago. but via her lawyers at Carter-Ruck she stated that she had relied on the principle of a "presumption of innocence" in continuing to work at the club and had "no knowledge" of the Times and Panorama allegations. Sullivan denies all wrongdoing.

Brady may have had no knowledge of those specific cases, but there can be little doubt that the woman who worked closely with Sullivan at his Sport Newspapers and football clubs for more than 30 years (Sullivan appointed her managing director at Birmingham City in 1993. when Brady was 23) was aware of other allegations.

Former Birmingham Mail editor Steve Dyson recalls Brady acting as middle-woman when he wanted to put allegations of sexual misconduct to Sullivan when he was co-owner of Birmingham City in 2008. The woman involved later dropped the case.

In the House of Lords, Tory peer Brady has argued to dilute the football governance bill. She told the Boardroom podcast, co-presented by Jack Sullivan (son of Davidany civil proceedings, regardless of their nature or relevance, to count against someone in an ownership determination".

proposed football regulator was "a solution in gulaton search of a problem".

In December 2024, Brady spoke in favour of an amendment to the bill's revised ownership suitability test. The bill stated that when the regulator checks a person's fitness to own or direct…

I think this is probably going to be the case. No difference in law / process between UK and any other aspirant. As I've mentioned before only opportunity would be if something really bad happened eg when Churchill offered political union to France in 1940.

One sees this in industry all the time. #PR and #comms people are told "strategy is a waste of time, get out there and do more. You need to believe". Almost every single time I've heard this its because management have run out of ideas, but they own the company so.......
