In the 'The Lustre Bowl,' (1908) William Nicholson plays with the shining contrast of the bowl against a dark black background. He would sometimes set up a still life but leave it untouched for days, absorbing every element, before painting it swiftly and with great skill.

Cimabue The Virgin and Child with Two Angels c.1280-5
Cimabue
documented 1272; died 1302
The Virgin and Child with Two Angels
about 1280-5

This is a revolutionary approach to a traditional image. Cimabue was one of the first Italian painters to apply a new naturalism to traditional Byzantine compositions. Here, the child tenderly touches his mother's hand. Her throne is placed at an angle to create a sense of space. The panel comes from a small devotional work painted with scenes from Christ's life.

Albrecht Dürer Saint Jerome about 1496
An northern Renaissance painting on wood by Dürer; the nearby panel reads:

German artist Albrecht Dürer travelled twice across the Alps to Venice. This panel was almost certainly painted after his first visit to the city in 1494/5.
Saint Jerome is presented as a hermit in the wilderness, beating his chest with rocks in empathy with Christ's Passion (his torture and crucifixion).
The mountainous setting is drawn from Dürer's detailed studies of landscapes, plants and animals.
The dazzlingly colourful sunrise (or sunset) suggests his knowledge of effects achieved by Venetian painters like Giovanni Bellini. An northern Renaissance painting on wood by Dürer; the nearby panel reads:

A celestial body bursts through the night sky. This is the first such image in the history of European painting. It may record an actual meteoric event, reflect Dürer's troubled dreams, or have a spiritual meaning. The fireball could symbolise the burning love of God experienced by Saint Jerome, depicted on the other side of the panel. According to the Bible, the sky falling to earth was a sign of the Apocalypse. This was a great concern for Christians around 1500, at the turn of the half-millennium.
