Kind of hope he tries. Venezuelan oil is heavy and requires a lot of processing before it can go into our systems. But I bet these guys would dump it in anyway and then be confused when things break.

Pietas was, of course, the defining virtue of Rome's legendary ancestor-hero Aeneas. Vergil, meanwhile, gives the the unique arts of Rome as "to crown peace with laws, to spare in war the humble and to war down the proud" in the Aeneid. These guys are ignorant of the culture they claim to idolize.

I feel the need to note that the Romans don't really present 'power' (potentia, vis) as their chief virtue. Instead, the Romans were "always harping on fides ['faith, trust']" (Dioc. Sic. 23.1); Cicero gives the virtue where Rome surpasses others as pietas (piety, Cic. Har. resp. 9.19).

The problem with this decentralized approach to moderation is that people, by and large, suck at it even if the protocol supports it. Throwing your hands up and going "well, we gave you all the tools. It's up to you now." ignores how most people actually behave.

Saying you can threaten trans people with camps? That’s fine. Telling the hard of trust and safety that there’s been an uptick in this behavior and telling him he’s to blame? Verboten, you’re suspended. Fuck this platform.

"Trans rights or Trans camps. You chose the camps and you're blaming Dems" followed by profanity.

Are they threatening trans users directly?
No. Trans folks in the US have been targeted repeatedly. That's awful and you have my sympathy.
Within the context of a single post we wouldn't consider it a direct threat or targeting a protected category. le send trans folks to concentration camps.

This is a great example of why it's a bad idea for dems to give an inch and accept Republican framing about issues like this. Piker isn't popular and neither are trans people. But the number of people who make voting decisions based on their hatred of either is, statistically, zero.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

I wish I loved anything as much as right-wingers love pretending to not know how words work. Also, note the echo of the trope of "I find your choices confusing, so therefore they must be an attack on me, personally or are part of some Machiavellian scheme against 'normal' people."
Comment left by someone pretending to be very confused/amused at my inclusion of my pronouns. Redacted for privacy. The text reads:

"I’m not the one triggered here mr or ms they/them. i am curious though, are you an actual he/him? Or just pretending to be? Sharing your pronouns unprompted makes it so confusing"

Fidelity’s Director of Global Macro saying that the AI trade has been “dead money” for three months, and that it’s inflationary, meaning (as I’ve discussed multiple times) that the more debt they raise the more expensive debt becomes and the more they build data centers the more expensive it gets

On the Al front, the trade has been dead money for more than 3 months now. The metrics I am following (token expenditures and GPU lease rates) are all flat to down. The price of memory (DRAM) seems to be the only thing that is still going up.

Yes, Al will change our lives (for the better l trust) and down the road it may well unleash a productivity miracle that raises the economy's non-inflationary speed limit enough to keep the world's mounting debt burden sustainable. But until then the buildout is inflationary with an unknown return for the companies who are investing trillions into compute. The demand fo capital (equity and debt) from corporates is rising at a $3.3 trillion clip.

Microsoft is maybe one of the best examples of the cancer killing American corporations large and small: the modern managerial class is wholly divorced from what their products *are*, why people pay for them, and the physical realities of production of making them in the first place.

Co-founder of Anthropic accidentally argues the only people with sufficient brainpower to "think through the response to the situation" are AI haters. 😂 And he's just wrong: if you want to understand "the situation" with LLMs, "stochastic parrots" will point you the right way. "AGI" won't. /1

@jackclarkSF
"stochastic parrot" was a mimetically-fit cognitive virus that spread from 2021-2025; it temporarily blinded many gifted people to the nature of AI progress, burning up crucial years in which they could have helped think through the response to the situation.
