From Pollokshields to Gilmorehill, and beyond.
Yet another version of that view everyone round here keeps photographing. The spire of Pollokshields Kirk mid-distance; the Squinty Bridge beyond it; the main building of Glasgow University beyond that; and Ben More beyond them all.

Is there a more instantly tantalising beginning to a book than the first page of the diaries of the Radnorshire clergyman Francis Kilvert, from the 1870s?
Tuesday, 8 February
From Wye Cliff to Pont Faen. Miss Child in great force. She showed me her clever drawings of horses and told me the adventures of the brown wood owl 'Ruth' which she took home from here last year. She wanted to call the owl 'Eve' but Mrs. Bridge said it should be called 'Ruth'. She and her sister stranded in London at night went to London Bridge hotel (having missed the last train) with little money and no luggage except the owl in a basket. The owl hooted all night in spite of their putting it up the chimney, before the looking glass, under the bedclothes, and in a circle of lighted candles which they hoped it would mistake for the sun. The owl went on hooting, upset the basket, got out and flew about the room.
The chambermaid almost frightened to death dared not come inside the door. Miss Child asked the waiter to get some mice for 'Ruth' but none could be got.

Tried to get a photo of the esplanade cygnets but dad had to make it all about himself. Or mum, I don’t know how to tell the difference.
An adult swan photobombs a pic of its cygnets. They’re on a pebble beach, with the straw nest just above its beak and a couple of dark grey pigeons keeping an eye on things.

Is tu riamh an ceann do dhleastanais, mu chòcaireachd, caoraich, leabhraichean; a bheil fios an d’fhuair thu do dhìol airson do dheataim is spàirn is sgìths? —Meg Bateman, “Màthair” from Soirbheas/Fair Wind, Polygon Books 2007 A #Gaelic #poem for #MothersDay
Màthair
Meg Bateman

Bha sinn a’coimhead nan rionnag
mus do thionndaidh sinn a-steach leis na coin,
is thuirt thu gum bu mhithich dhut
na h-ainmean aca ionnsachadh gu ceart.

Ach chan fhada gus am bi thu fhèin nam measg
’s is mise a bhios a’feuchainn ri d’ainmeachadh,
thusa aig nach fhaca mi do nàdar
ach mar phriobadh fann an cuid solais –

Is tu riamh an ceann do dhleastanais,
mu chòcaireachd, caoraich, leabhraichean;
a bheil fios an d’fhuair thu do dhìol
airson do dheataim is spàirn is sgìths?

O gun lasainn de dh’aighear annad
na leigeadh leam d’fhaicinn gu slàn,
no chan fhaide thu bhuam nuair a shiùbhlas tu
nab ha thu rim thaobh a-nochd.Mother
English translation by Meg Bateman

We looked at the stars for a while
Before we turned in with the dogs,
And you said it was high time
You learnt their names properly.

But soon you will be among them yourself
And I will be the one trying to name you;
You whose nature I have seen
Only as their faint points of light –

As you labour behind duty,
Behind house-work, farm-work, books,
And who knows if you have your reward
For your care and effort and exhaustion.

I wish I could kindle a joy in you
That would let me see you whole
Or you won’t be further when you go
Than you were tonight at my side.

Virologist Charlotte Friend (b. #OTD in 1921) proved viruses could cause cancer (1957) & revolutionized virology (& helped define modern retrovirology). She later pioneered differentiation therapy, showing cancer cells could be "reverted" to health, defining a new path to treat cancer. #WomenInSTEM
A black-and-white montage portrait of pioneering American virologist Charlotte Friend (1921–1987), who discovered the Friend leukemia virus and advanced understanding of retroviruses and cancer. The main image shows her in her laboratory, seated at a compound microscope in a research setting lined with shelves of scientific books and journals. She is a middle-aged woman with short, neatly styled dark hair, wearing round-framed eyeglasses, a pearl necklace, and a white lab coat over a patterned blouse with a floral collar. She smiles warmly and confidently at the camera, one hand resting near the microscope's stage, conveying dedication, intelligence, and approachability. In the lower right corner is a smaller inset close-up portrait of a younger Charlotte Friend, smiling brightly with softer features, short wavy hair, and a simple white blouse, highlighting her earlier career. The composition blends her professional lab environment with a personal archival photo, celebrating her groundbreaking contributions to virology, leukemia research, and women's roles in science during the mid-20th century. The overall mood is one of scholarly achievement, warmth, and historical significance.
