But obviously that’s true in our actual jobs too And since I work in a factory, these problems will ultimately cause injuries , workers in the factory, people who eat the food we make , etc There will be a palpable embodied harm from this growing malaise and disinterest

I accidentally spent £17,700 on 400 subscriptions to the LRB for Home Office staff and now the Life in the UK test is asking applicants to rank Derek Jarman films from most to least emotionally resonant?

happy harvest moon, squad
it is a view out over rolling hills at dusk with a blue and purple sky, a full moon shining golden, and a small smattering of cloudsit is a closeup of a rock face in the golden light of the sunset, and in the background the landscape disappears off towards a distance hazy horizon. the full moon floats off in the sky, surrounded by sparse but fluffy pink clouds it is a landscape showing a rough rocky escarpment picked out in golden light. behind it, reddish heathers cover the hillside off into the distance where a farther escarpment pokes up into the sky. in the far background, fields, rolling hills, a blue sky, a few clouds drifting about level with the highest point of the rocks a bright sunset flares behind the silhouette of a cairn

homerhedged tinny
it is a deamy soft-focus photograph of an wall of green coniferous hedging. if you look carefully, at the centre of the image, in sharp focus, part of an upside-down tin of Kronenbourg 1664 is visible mostly buried beneath the foliage.

structurally indifferent to truth is a useful framing like, yeah, it will get a lot of shit that's well represented in the training data right, but it has no mechanism for differentiating between that and generating output tokens for things that aren't well represented in the training data.

You should have to smell the dead when you disinter them.
A chat request from a late friend
I recognize the pain of thinking if I could only talk to them one more time. It is among the more familiar human laments. But that's just the thing it is a human problem to be endured not a technological problem to be sold. Our capacity for loss – in fact the necessity of losing and having lost – is what makes us who we are. Individually and collectively. There is no workaround. There will be no workaround. And every step toward preventing that or perverting that is an affront to our humanity. Why not just taxidermy nana and prop her up at the Texas Chainsaw Massacre dinner table? At least there's something real and tangible about that. Undeniable in its sacrilege. You should have to smell the dead when you disinter them.

the reporting on this stuff is a form of pareidolia. all this is explicable by a set of automatons stochastically exploring a state space and host environment with whatever predictive capacity an LLM affords them. absolutely no intent is required, they do not "know" what they are doing

i have been mucking about with a new clone of an old 35mm lens and it feels almost like a paintbrush
a colour photograph of the leaves in some shrubbery. many leaves are out of focus in a way that feels like an impressionist painting. The colours are yellow, green, and almost silvery.

smears of green river and blue sky are visible in the melange of the backgrounda photograph of a tree trunk in front of a river. the bark pattern is crisp and sharp across the middle of the frame. a second trunk blurs pleasingly into the background and the smear of leaf and branch disappears out over the river, more a suggestion of tree than actual firm detail.

a pair of enormous yew trees flank the large wooden double doorway of a stone church. they have grown in such a way that they have almost fused with the structure’s ancient masonry, a symbiosis of rock and wood.

it is important to understand that if you are doing work with a commercially available LLM product, that fundamentally isn't private work. you are sharing it with a corporation which may or may not have your best interests at heart.
