They asked me about my decorum and I reminded them women are being raped at Cornell, a woman running for Congress was raped in the middle of the night, so they should worry less about me being a bitch (a very gendered critique considering other behavior on council) and deliver for the working class

astonishing to see them file suit over this. it exempts 100s of thousands of Portlanders from the tax, while raising it a bit ($15 for the year) on those with the most ability to pay. it would be a shame if council had a hearing on the Clean and Safe ESD rates and how those have been hiked > 10%

I have a confession to make. The townhomes I & others spent most of a decade trying to legalize are popping up all over Oregon & elsewhere...and I love that...but they're a problem in one big way. (get ready for a twisty thread about the housing report @sightline.org just published)

Introspection would show that PNW has had more political success than any other Portland issue-based advocacy group of the last decade. I would consider that quite a track record of political savviness. Time will tell on the savviness of this call but it will be decided by votes and outcomes

Thank you! I live in the area and it's frustrating to see the attrition of street seating and other creative reuses of pavement/parking lots/curb space. The removal of Guero's street seating was a big loss, and according to them it's because of city demands that they weren't able to meet

We’ve got to do better than this. This isn’t my district, but it’s a harbinger of a broader threat to small businesses in Portland and how our restaurants can contribute to a vibrant street scape. I’ll be in conversation with the D3 councilors about how we can address this.

An absolutely fascinating discussion on this stuff today and something that I didn't realize that I probably need to care about: It's not only about using data to determine the highest price you might accept, but using that data to give you less of a discount that might be offered to someone else.

Small-scale apartment and condo buildings would offer accessible homes with elevators in more Oregon towns and neighborhoods. Four key policy changes would make this possible.

Oh look, a 1940 photo that shows one of my favourite weird Portland streetcar remnants: the nick out of the sidewalk on the northeast corner of SE 28th and Belmont that allowed the track to pass cleanly onto Belmont (on the left here, looking east on Belmont). It's still there today.

When the city failed to put bike lanes on Hawthorne, they explicitly promised to add multiple new greenways to nearby streets, including SE 34th (which should be a premier bike street through Sunnyside). They've completely reneged on this promise

We're having to fight PBOT to prevent them from watering down planned 11th/12th bike lanes, and those are legally required as part of Central City in Motion. Plus that corridor is much less space-constrained than 20th. Current PBOT leadership seems hesitant at best to take space away from cars

You literally can't trust what these people say. They will say whatever they can to get council to give approval for what they want (which is whatever business or industry want) and then they will commit the City to something without authority.

Taylor is smart enough to know that while this bad faith argument won't hold, his ruminating would scare council into closed door session. Problematically, he left enough in chamber to suggest anything short of giving I² whatever they want would result in the City's financial liability to Zenith.

16th is so bad, with terrible crossings and so many hills. I only take it because the door-zone lanes on 7th are arguably even worse. Fortunately, we may be getting bike lanes on 11th/12th very soon (altho w/ terrible mixing zones b/c PBOT is prioritizing car congestion over safety)

34th absolutely should be the pre-eminent N-S greenway in southeast Portland and yet. Every option west of 34th until you reach 7th has significant hills. Also, 34th takes you through the heart of Belmont/Hawthorne/Division with the highest concentration of destinations

Greenway intersections that have no priority bike/ped crossings have an amazing feature when a dozen+ cars use it as a cut through they just clog up the whole block waiting for cross traffic to let them out Shout out to SE Salmon and 30th, I love your pedestrian flags and missing concrete planters

34th (along w/ 23rd and 45th) was promised to be made a greenway when PBOT chose not to put bike infra on the repaved Hawthorne. But they've tragically abandoned that promise. So we've ended up with no bike lanes on Hawthorne nor good greenway alternatives. Modal hierarchy! More info in David's post

The context about her views being shared by 79% of Americans in polls (when slanted btw) is one thing but the insistence that this issue does not matter since it’s only affecting trans people and it’s been settled by sports bodies is just so callously indifferent.

"The arena is only a small piece of that bigger picture," Dewayne Hankins, the Trail Blazers' president of business operations, told the council. "Portland's current stagnant business climate, high income taxes, and divisive political environment make this a tough city to invest in. It makes it harder to sell tickets, secure corporate partnerships and ...

I remain genuinely shocked that the American public saw what USA Gymnastics did for over a decade and then let a bunch of people persuade them that all school level sports k-12 should be under the same rules as the U.S. Olympic ecosystem because trans people asked to play on teams where they’d fit.
