The part of this that isn't talked about enough is that roughly one third of all Portlanders are trying to survive on sub $20k annual income. 214k people over 18. After taxes that's an entire annual income spent on housing alone.

Portland police are refusing to return my riffle with no legal reason to do so. I have no felonies, no felony charges, no charges at all. They are claiming I have arrests in other states. I have zero arrests in any other state. "Your case is really complicated. I cant give you your riffle."

I have zero federal charges, I had a "failure to obey" federal charge from 2025 ICE that was resolved months ago. They have no legal reason to refuse the return of my hunting riffle. The least they can do is let me sell it or give it to family.

They don't care about this, and the original restructuring by council (add $1k min income to avoid a head tax) seems relevant. Tonkon Torp's involvement has the DiLorenzo method all over it: sue 'biggly' and take the settlement to affect policy. 6-6 split + the mayor.

If PPB is providing data (including "flock type" alpr) to LexisNexis then they are providing it to ICE and the Feds. A restrictive data policy is clear and consise, that's why everything we ever see is not. We need this for PPB, but also for Portland broadly, to include commercial surveillance.

1. Though PPB uses Motorola’s Vigilant Solutions license plate readers, it is not known whether data captured by PPB’s Motorola ALPR devices is shared into the data Vigilant Solutions sells through the Thomson Reuters CLEAR data partnership.

The parable of the Nazi bar fails in that the inclusion doesn't happen over time. You let one Nazi in your bar and you have a Nazi bar.

So big pink got sold off at a discount compressing the tax liability of the new owner is all the talk. But then the new owner hires the former owner to "manage" the property at per sq ft rate of what, $10mil / year? Maybe that should be a bigger part of the convo.

Personally don't understand why the new arts tax exemption is only $20k and a pass through llc business tax would be 25x that at half a mil. $20k and you can't even afford a roof in Portland. Business tax exemptions should be tighter and averaged over employee salaries.

J. Wychodeski @deserteyelid.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
We should replace the arts tax with something like this. No where to go but winning.

This type of thing would never happen if the city cut the bloat from PPB's media wing & stopped letting them craft the narrative. The pio officer that released it should be disciplined as well, and an outside investigation into who all collaborated on this.

This is what it's all about. Almost half of all property in Portland is owner addressed to a different location. None of that has investment benefit or potential to its occupants. You are the mine from which they extract their "abundance".

when a fascist assaults someone in front of them and the response is “yeah well they need to file a report first,” that isn’t some neutral limitation on what police can do. It’s a choice.

We replaced our entire city government, but for some reason we have to overlap these two for years because it's one more holdout from the police union to avoid accountability. Ridiculous.

This whole thing is sketch and was a bad idea from the start. There's also the vigilantism from the PDNA, recording people and harassing them throughout the neighborhood. Portland needs to provide protected class status to poverty and start treating these actions like the hate crimes that they are.

Laborers' Local 483 jobs are among those the mayor is privatizing in transferring the Portland Tennis Center to "save $". The City is contractually obligated to retain the workers. Be curious to know if the "savings" are not actual and just transfered on paper to another facility.

In truth, this is a distinction, not a misconception. Releasing a statement via official Portland Police Bureau channels as "Chief", is nominal to a uniformed presser. This is not a letter to the editor or opinion piece in The O from "Bob, not Portland"

Along with the fact that every NEW sworn police and fire employee necessarily raises taxes, we also learned that due to FPDR "picking up" their PERS contributions, it costs the public at least 38% more (and rising) for a sworn officer to do a job that could otherwise be done by a non-sworn employee.

Actually, this makes it worse! This is an official statement from the Portland Police press office engaging in electioneering. Instead of being from the Chief, it's now the department: the ever nebulous "we".

The Vacancy Tax report by ECONorthwest is so wildly detached from conditions in Portland it's to the point of having ignored them entirely, with the exception of hypothesising on measure 5/50 constraints. Entirely a pro landlord speculative fiction.

Make turning your giant oversized house into cottages the new prius signaling.

J. Wychodeski @deserteyelid.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
"age in place" is an interesting approach to this. What if we approached infill with the same lens? Replace oversized houses on giant lots with cottage clusters & 6-plexes (already coded). Divide the lot and it's former owners get a unit to age in with some (undetermined) equity.

Taylor is smart enough to know that while this bad faith argument won't hold, his ruminating would scare council into closed door session. Problematically, he left enough in chamber to suggest anything short of giving I² whatever they want would result in the City's financial liability to Zenith.

Pretty wild they don't already do this. If the city paired a transit tax on large employeers with discounts for providing transit passes they could probably patch some potholes and and shore up transit with a stake on Trimet's board.
