It’s October 1st! I had grand plans of reading so many Spooky Season novels and playing so many Spooky Season video games, but I’m not off to a good start. Still, October is a new month!

Just re-read “You Are Old, Father William,” from Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures,” and it’s really giving all those AI videos of Mitch McConnell breakdancing and doing back flips. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You_Are...

I am begging people to know the difference between Old, Middle, and early/modern English. Shakespeare did NOT write in Old English. Not even close!!! Yes, this sub-skeeting things I saw on insta re: Egger’s R&J adaptation.

I do think believing that using AI to pull together research for you for the purposes of writing fundamentally misunderstands why doing your own research is an important part of the writing process.

What blows my mind with AI is the people who are like "how could you possibly function without it?" To which I say, "you, YOU literally did until what like 3 years ago? Did it degrade your brain that fast that you can't figure out how to do the thing you trained for years and earned a PhD to do?"

A lot of people don’t realize the dust bowl wasn’t a natural phenomenon. It happened when agrobusiness interests dramatically transformed the plains without regard for drought, and created vicious dust storms that choked whole families to death. That’s what I think of when I read about data centers.

in case you've never seen it, this is Roger Ebert on The Mummy
There is within me an unslaked hunger for preposterous adventure movies. I resist the bad ones, but when a "Congo" or an
"Anaconda" comes along, my heart leaps up and I cave in. "The Mummy" is a movie like that. There is hardly a thing I can say in its favor, except that I was cheered by nearly every minute of it. I cannot argue for the script, the direction, the acting or even the mummy, but I can say that I was not bored and sometimes I was unreasonably pleased. There is a little immaturity stuck away in the crannies of even the most judicious of us, and we should treasure it.

Your regular reminder that there is no legal path from martial law to suspending elections in this country. That doesn't mean there is no path. It just means that we need to reject the framing that the federal government has any legal authority to cease elections.
