I got Millie, my cat, a haunted house. Spooky season!
Millie, a white cat with tabby patches on her head, sits on top of a two story scratch pad that is shaped like a haunted house. The facade is orange, dusty rose, and purple with orange pumpkins and ghosts and bats decorating the house.

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

Then last night I watched “Nosferatu” (1922) for the first time, and what a masterpiece. I think I’m going to have a vampire-heavy month, as I work on a “Nosferatu” project, I purchased “Carmilla” on a whim, and my book club is reading “Interview With The Vampire.” Exciting!

Other Spooky Season festivities: last Tuesday I visited the “Horror” exhibit at the Academy Museum, Wednesday I went to an event for “She Did It,” a new horror movie produced by Kat McPhee and Tom Lenk, and on Thursday I did my first ever LA Haunted Hayride!

Okay, I have finished this one! Definitely brought the spooky vibes, though for my money, “The Pale Horse” or “The Sittaford Mystery” might be the best spooky season Christies (no, not “Hallowe’en Party”). Onto Tim Curry’s “Vagabond”!

Dr Abigail Fine @onceuponafine.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
And I just had Tim Curry’s autobiography, “Vagabond,” come in as an audiobook from my Libby holds. Once I’m done with Christie, that’s next on the docket. Again, not spooky, exactly, but Tim Curry! 💔 It fits the season.

I’m also listening to “By the Pricking of my Thumbs” by Agatha Christie, narrated by Hugh Fraser. Not exactly spooky, but a fun Tommy & Tuppence mystery (and new to me)!

To start off this October, I began a reread of Roger Zelazny’s “A Night in the Lonesome October.” I’ll read one chapter per day throughout the month. I love this novel, a perfect Halloween advent calendar.

What blows my mind with AI is the people who are like "how could you possibly function without it?" To which I say, "you, YOU literally did until what like 3 years ago? Did it degrade your brain that fast that you can't figure out how to do the thing you trained for years and earned a PhD to do?"

A lot of people don’t realize the dust bowl wasn’t a natural phenomenon. It happened when agrobusiness interests dramatically transformed the plains without regard for drought, and created vicious dust storms that choked whole families to death. That’s what I think of when I read about data centers.

in case you've never seen it, this is Roger Ebert on The Mummy
There is within me an unslaked hunger for preposterous adventure movies. I resist the bad ones, but when a "Congo" or an
"Anaconda" comes along, my heart leaps up and I cave in. "The Mummy" is a movie like that. There is hardly a thing I can say in its favor, except that I was cheered by nearly every minute of it. I cannot argue for the script, the direction, the acting or even the mummy, but I can say that I was not bored and sometimes I was unreasonably pleased. There is a little immaturity stuck away in the crannies of even the most judicious of us, and we should treasure it.
