New UC Berkeley study links deep-sleep loss to Alzheimer’s-related protein buildup - Berkeley News
As tau builds up in our brains, non-REM brain waves necessary for memory formation become erratic.

We can see tau and lonely waves rising together over time. What we can't yet say is which leads — and that question will shape how we proceed.

Independent support: with Yo-El Ju at WashU, in a separate cohort, people with more solitary slow waves had higher CSF tau/amyloid ratios. Different measure, different sample, same pattern.

In 20-somethings, these waves swept about a handspan across the scalp. In adults in their 60s and 70s, they traveled shorter distances and stayed solitary - lonely waves. More frontal tau, more lonely waves, less overnight memory retention, cross-sectionally and years later.

💡 Each slow wave is an enormous population of neurons switching off and back on together, cascading in sequence across the cortex. That coordinated shutdown shows up only in deep sleep — and threfore may be part of why we sleep at all.

Another postdoc piece out today in @natneuro.nature.com! 🧠💤 In unimpaired older adults, frontal tau pathology tracked with lonely NREM slow waves that fail to travel — and these waves predicted worse overnight memory. full-text: rdcu.be/jDcgH2sK8VZa @ucberkeleyofficial.bsky.social 🧵👇

Increasing EEG electrode density improves decoding of visual categories and source localization: an exploratory ultra-high-density EEG study
Communications Engineering, Published online: 24 February 2026; doi:10.1038/s44172-026-00611-wLeonhard Schreiner and colleagues investigate how EEG electrode density shapes visual decoding performance, showing that denser arrays yield higher accuracy. Their findings delineate the practical limits of non-invasive EEG and offer guidance for selecting electrode count and spatial configuration

It's still 10 times better during sleep compared to wake. e.g we know pretty well what slow waves are from scalp to cell level. As for the rest there is no consensus what brain osc are in all levels :)

For #FluorescenceFriday✨ Exploring the beauty of the locus Coeruleus using IF staining: neurons🔵 surrounded by glowing astrocytes🟢 embracing delicate blood vessels🔴, alongside striking pTau signals💗. A vivid reminder of the cellular complexity shaping brain health and disease. #LC #Neuroscience
Here’s my Fluorescence Friday highlight: just got this beautiful shot from the locus coeruleus in our latest tissue section! You can see astrocytes (in green) glowing and wrapping around tiny blood vessels (in red), with pTau staining (in magenta) lighting up the scene. It’s wild how much is going on in just one microscopic field—so cool to see these markers all together and think about what they mean for brain health and Alzheimer’s research. Loving the chance to peek into these cellular hangouts each week! #FluorescenceFriday #PhDLife #Neuroscience
