For those still learning about Germany’s neo-Nazi AfD, here are the salient facts:
INTELLIFACTS
ALICE WEIDEL BECOMES THE FIRST LEADER IN THE WORLD WHO IS ANTI-IMMIGRATION BUT HAS AN IMMIGRANT WIFE, IS ANTI-LGBTQ+ BUT IS A LESBIAN HERSELF, OPPOSES LGBT ADOPTION BUT HAS ADOPTED TWO CHILDREN, AND IS A HARDCORE GERMAN NATIONALIST BUT LIVES IN SWITZERLAND

The EU is tackling the issue of youth mental health by focusing on early intervention and fighting stigma. If you or someone you know ever needs a safe space to talk, call: 📞116 111📞 It’s a continent-wide network of free, anonymous youth support lines. You're not broken, you're human.
The image shows four battery icons (from left to right): a fully charged green, a partially charged light green, a yellow battery with nearby text saying: 'take a break at this point', and a red one labelled 'not this', indicating exhaustion or burnout. There is also a minimalistic tangled line representing a brain, and a small European Union logo in the top right corner.

I am constantly surprise by the barrier that many postdocs looking for a job in the #biosci find when they have a #preprint. They are often told: don’t bother to apply until you publish your paper. WHAT DOES PUBLICATION SAY ABOUT THE WORK THAT THE PREPRINT DOESN’T brief 🧵

Losing one side of Superior Colliculus is bad, but losing both sides seems fine. Wait, what? Flora & team discovered why: both sides press for contra actions and against inaction, obeying an incredibly simple additive rule. Out today in bioRxiv: www.biorxiv.org/cgi/content/...
A diagram showing a sequence of linear operations, with visual signals from visual cortex added to auditory signals from auditory cortex. Prefrontal cortex sums these signals and superior colliculus provides a constant, stimulus-independent factor pushing for each eligible action. The final decision is taken via softmax.

I also don't think PIs understand how chasing this high-impact factor clout is detrimental to very young scientists. From our point of view it seems impossible to stay in science if this is the bar we have to reach every time. And if we can't it's game over.
