Let's break this nonsense down. The $300bn of debt 'anchoring down NZ' is the little red stub in image 2. Cute. See the blue above it? Yes, NZ Govt has more financial assets than debt. NZ has $4.9 trillion of debts, and $4.7 trillion of financial assets 🤷‍♂️ Don't hear about those, ae? [🧵 1/n]

New Zealand Taxpayers' Union
@TaxpayersUnion
$300 billion in debt anchoring down New Zealand. 🇳🇿💸

This debt wasn’t racked up by one government. It’s the result of years of governments treating the public purse like a credit card and leaving the bill for someone else.

The interest alone is costing taxpayers $28 million a day, money that could otherwise go towards the services and infrastructure Kiwis rely on.

And here’s the reality: every single Kiwi carries the consequences, regardless of how much money is in their bank account.

This election is a choice about the future we leave behind. Do we keep kicking the can down the road, or finally confront the debt and the cost of servicing it?

The debt gets passed down. So does the bill. How much longer can we afford to ignore it?

Sorry I'm late to the party but we all know the whole "politicians meeting with gangs" discourse is just a racist klaxon, right? No one sincerely thinks this is a real issue. It's mainstream Pākehā politicians rarking up their Pākehā base and journos jumping in because it's good for clicks, yes?

#NZpol I'm sure the TPU would hate for us to remember that time they did a poll and it came back THE PUBLIC ARE IN FAVOUR OF SPREADING THE TAX LOAD to the top end of town. So even the people that seppo group polled veered... away from their typical prescription that all tax leads to the gulags.
A post from Jordan Rivers [@jordanriversnz.bsky.social] of a TPU poll they ran on their website and results as at 9.35pm on the 27th of July (with apparently 14,453 polled, so a decent size)...

58.1% were keen on a wealth tax
40.13% were not

But it's clear that even the people the RW group polled veered... away from their typical prescription that all tax leads to Stalins gulags.

A reminder: If your business can’t afford to pay its taxes your business is NOT successful (and frankly parasitic to both people and planet) #nzpol
From RNZ Live Blog “Seymour strikes back”

Seymour also took a crack at the Greens' economic development plan, saying it was "hypocritical", saying that the Government would create jobs fuelled by tax and debt "even as they gleefully wish job creators out of the country."

"Last week, a successful business owner who employs hundreds asked me to tell the Greens that he couldn't afford to pay half-a-million dollars more tax under their policies. He said he would leave if they got in.

"I put it to Marama Davidson and she gleefully beamed 'ka kite'. You can't say you're a jobs champion and then celebrate real job creators leaving the country."

Sorry, I'll explain. We currently react to inflation by reducing the disposable income of spenders so that demand falls and unemployment goes up. We use a bufferstock of unemployed people to keep workers desperate, so wages are suppressed and we don't get a feedback loop (wage 🔄 prices) [🧵 1/n]
