I for one think it’s bad that the president can just say crazy stuff all day every day and 99% of it doesn’t make the news because we’ve normalized having an insane president

Additionally, I don't believe voters disliked Harris to the same extent they perceived her as unserious and unready. Vance has a bigger likeability gap than she did. I can't imagine how a VP wins a "third term" for a universally hated president when *he himself* is broadly not popular.

In the famous words of Gillian Jacobs on Community, a lot of voters are like “I can excuse the racism!” But there are no follow up questions. They don’t vote morally and are genuinely surprised when amoral people may be using the government to pillage the country.

Anna argues that Mexico’s first republic collapsed not from chaos at the periphery, but from centralist elites reclaiming power from the states. Factionalism, violence, and collapsing trust destroyed Mexican federalism from its outset. Full review: nwcasebolt.substack.com/p/forging-me...

In order to deal with the constant onslaught of destabilizing news, I have adopted an attitude of "therapeutic accelerationism." Any time some event happens that will be included in a history textbook as a portent of the dark times, I crack a cold one, sit back and think "all according to plan."

If this is how the GOP ends, you could be sad about the fate of Abraham Lincoln’s party. Or you could rejoice that his vision triumphed so completely that, when his party fell to racists and bigots, the nation followed his example and put it down. His truth is marching on.

"Were you there" is vintage YEC apologetics. Forty years ago when I was a kid, the literature encouraged us to throw this in the face of teachers who, in the telling, would sputter and flail and fumble in the face of such a powerful solipsism. The seeds planted then are sprouting now.

Correct. You need only immerse in the rantings of people who think the Constitution offers no protections to non-citizens. This is why they get exercised by the extension of due process to immigrants in jeopardy of deportation. In their minds, citizens have protections and immigrants don't. Period.

I’m learning that the people who gamified paragraphs are having trouble reading books. www.axios.com/2026/08/11/r...

AXIOS

Al has become my reading buddy as I've plowed through my summer book list, helping me keep track of plots and characters, unpack themes, and make sense of wordy, old prose.
• Why it matters: The way many of us actually read books - a few pages before bed, a chapter at the beach, another on a plane - makes it easy to lose the thread. Al can help you pick it back up without starting over.
Ш I really got into using Al while reading James Fenimore Cooper's "The Last of the Mohicans." The text was far too dense for casual vacation reading. My first prompt asked:
• "T'd like a guide as I read The Last of the Mohicans who can help me understand what I've read and where the story is, without giving spoilers or getting ahead of my progress. Can you do this, chapter by chapter?"
• The robot agreed: "Cooper's sentences are long and his diction is archaic."
