Hui Yuk once proposed that Simondon's criteria for alienation from technology is more useful than Marx's. This post doesn't mention Yuk. But I agree that Marxism (and BlueSkyism) is reductionist on this topic. blog.christianperone.com/2025/01/note... cc: @aelkus.bsky.social @opfuchs.gay

That wiki reminded me that Yuk Hui studied under Stiegler, though his theories on technology are his own development (have not read him myself)

Maybe at the electoral level, but Peter Magyar came in with intimate knowledge of the corruption, a clear plan of action, and the drive to do something about it. The Democrats so far score 0 for 3 on this one.

I’ve wondered about LLMs being net-positive on the info space, since the people who tend to trust them are people who would otherwise be getting their info from Facebook groups, WhatsApp forwards, and quora LLMs tend to require the liberal bias that comes with reality to function.

To be fair, I've also seen this happen when telling then-frontier LLMs about the war against Iran and the closure of Hormuz. They did the full "babe that is psychotic there is no way that is happening what are you making up right now?" thing

this is exactly my opinion. there may be a superstrate of extremely difficult and unique safety problems around AI, but the substrate is simply that no one takes basic precautions seriously becasue they imagine (or pretend to imaigne) that it is futile, and basic precautions slow down launches.

like this sort of anti-ai position imagines “the complete removal of all LLMs from existence” as a plausible end-goal, however, this only remains plausible if you maintain the belief that they do not have *any* novel capabilities whatsoever, and that it’s all ultimately a parlor trick

There have to be some kind of weird avant-garde literary possibilities embedded in a machine like this, in terms of things like the interface of the novel as experienced by the reader (e.g a possibly interactive artifact) as well as its underlying structure in narrative/formal terms

There are some really great, articulate proponents of the view that Big Tech is too powerful and needs to be reigned in (anyone from Quinn Slobian to Meredith Whittaker). I think it’s unfortunate that Bender and Gebru have taken so much attention away from those more coherent voices.

this is more important than niche internet arguments make it seem: if LLMs don't work, who cares that Palantir is rolling it out for surveillance? Hell, maybe it's even good, if the state's machines start hallucinating the addresses of random Trump supporters when dispatching ICE. But they do work.

I don't believe training is plagiarism. I agree with some of the criticism of the tech companies and CEOs, and I believe the products should be subject to environmental & labor regs. The question here is strictly about acknowledging the utility of it. That shouldn't be part of your critique.

No, that was the point. How did you miss it? Reading books is the opposite of cognitive decline. I could not have performed that kind of conversion on my own before a few months ago. I have no desire to think about manual steps to to do that. I'm glad to offload that so I can get right to reading.

Some of the Claude models are actually argumentative to the point of off-putting pedantry, and were tuned that way over time in a way that suggests responsiveness to user feedback. So that is less strong of a criticism that it might seem

I also believed a lot of these tech critics, largely because it was all sort of a continuation of crypto criticism, so I assumed LLMs were also just a bunch of garbage. I'm a little bit irritated at having been misled

As someone who is sympathetic to a lot of the criticisms of tech companies, I fear the overreliance on performative outrage about their products will simply continue to get steamrolled by the tech companies

The unwillingness of many on the political left to engage with AI—or even just with the media available about its capabilities—is creating an epistemic gap in the discourse that will not serve us well in the long run.

Let me put it this way: that others routinely misinterpret your words to the point where you feel called to patrol social media to confront and correct them, is its own indicator that “communicative intent” is not a robust way of thinking about how language makes meaning in the world.

The LLM majors in America are often bad faith actors. The social consequences of mass compute, prediction, and function in many professional knowledge processing is serious. And some of the most prominent critics of this technology do not have the basic technical and academic familiarity with them.
