Looking forward to welcoming people to our @pictishartssociety.bsky.social conference this afternoon! A fantastic line-up of experts discussing the 'Pictishness' of Pictish art. We'll also pay tribute to David Henry, editor of the Pinkfoot Press, who very sadly died this week.
Agenda slide for Day 1 of the Pictish Arts Society conference 2026, on the theme of the Pictishness of Pictish Art. The conference runs from 1.40 to 5.30 and we have four 40-minute papers with 10 minutes Q&A each. The speakers and titles are: Professor Jane Geddes, Insular Art and its Pictish Components; Dr Martin Goldberg, The Changing Artistry of the Pictish Symbols Over Time; Professor Gordon Noble, Stone and the Gods: Religious Cognition and Stone Carving in Pictland; and Andy Heald, The Pictishness of Pictish Metalwork? The day is dedicated to the late David Henry of the Pinkfoot Press, who published a new edition of John Romilly Anderson and Joseph Anderson's foundational 1903 work The Early Christian Monuments of Scotland, as well as many other titles of key importance to Pictish studies.

We certainly enjoy our time #outinthefield, whether that’s undertaking geophysical surveys, building recording, walkover surveys, or excavation (among many other things!), but that’s not the end of the story. What happens to all the 'stuff' we find?

Provan Hall, dating back in part to the 1460s and built as a base for the Prebendary of Barlanark, before renovation. This little-known gem stands in Auchinlea Park, on the west side of Glasgow's Easterhouse and close to the M8 motorway. More pics and info www.undiscoveredscot... #Scotland #Glasgow
Provan Hall. The image shows a rough stone building of two storeys in height and a circular tower on the corner nearest us. The right side, which extends away from us, is in shadow. This building is connected by a linking stone wall to another range on the left, which is finished in white. There are trees in the background. The sky is mainly blue.

Summer holiday, 1813 edition 🌊   That summer, artist William Daniell set off from Land’s End to travel the coast of Great Britain, sketching the landscapes along the way.   The result? Voyage Round Great Britain, an eight-volume record of 308 beautifully detailed acquatints of Britain’s coastline
An engraved drawing from inside a cave looking out to sea. The cave is full of cylindrical rock formations (that almost look like tree trunks or logs) and waves are crashing against them. In the background you can see ships out at sea in the distance, with birds flying in the sky.Engraving of a scenic view of a rugged coastline. Waves are crashing up against the side of the rocks and in the distance you can see land further out at sea. The coast is covered in puffins, both sat on the clifftops and flying.Engraving illustration of a ruined castle, all that remains is a turret, precariously positioned on the edge of a cliff. Surrounding it is lots of greenery, a beach and the sea. It looks like a lovely summer evening and there are people down at the beach and a couple sat by the ruins with their dog admiring the view.An engraving illustration of the a view out to the sea. In the foreground, you can see lots of greenery, grass where deer are grazing and large Monterey Cypress trees are growing leading down from the clifftop to the sea.
