Ancient and beautiful amber pendants worn by hunter-gatherers during the Danish Mesolithic some 10,000 years ago! 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows three glossy, bright orange, drop-shaped pieces of amber arranged in a row against a dark background in a museum display case. Each piece of amber is decorated with finely incised patterns. The smalleest piece on the left is decorated with a comb motif- three horizontal lines with short vertical lines on top. The largest piece in the middle has a patchwork of alternating incised rectangles, and the piece on the right has four evenly spaced horizontal rows a Ross the surface made up of drilled pits. Each piece of amber has a hole at the top suggesting it was attached to a cord to be worn as jewellery or suspended.

Amber has many properties which may have been associated with 'magic'. For example, when rubbed against fur, amber produces static electricity which can give off sparks in the dark, make hair stand on end, and attract small things towards it.

These pieces are part of the collections of the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. They are currently on loan at the State Museum of Prehistory in Halle, Germany for the ‘Shamaness’ temporary exhibition.

Start your week with us in the Bureau for our new series, Bureau Bites. These informal, 45min online gatherings are open to all, whether you're a postgraduate student, a heritage manager or a senior consultant. Keep an eye on our LinkedIn account where we'll post a link to a short text (30 min read) the week before we meet. We understand how dynamic, energetic and enterprising (ie busy) we all are so please join the conversation even you haven't been able to make time to read and reflect in advance. Readings will be a mix of websites, blogs, reports, excerpts from academic papers.

The aim is to reconnect us with our communities of practice and to create space for the kind of thinking we might not be able to do on the daily grind. We invite participants to start a light-touch reflective journal to help document these conversations, which you may find useful in your work.

These gatherings also mark the start of ButCH's journey towards being a business partnership and launch of our redesigned website https://37looestreet.org/home/butch/

Just one week to go until the third of our ‘Championing the Local’ series. We’ll explore why some decisions about land use are best made at landscape-scale, and how RLUPs and bioregions with natural, not political, boundaries enable this. ⏰ 4-6pm 📆 Mon 21 Sept 📌 online 🔗 seda.scot/championing-...
SEDA LAND EVENT

Landscape-scale governance
Mon 21st September 4-6pm
Online – free admission

Landscape-Scale Governance is the third in the CHAMPIONING THE LOCAL series of SEDA Land Conversations.

This conversation will explore when it may be appropriate to scale up the model to regional or national level. Regional Land Use Partnerships (RLUPs) and bioregions are models bordered by natural geographic and landscape boundaries such as mountain ridges and watersheds. Both adopt a natural capital approach to understanding their regional landscapes. This addresses issues in a cross-sectoral way, using a systems approach, rather than simplifying the issues into sectoral silos. This is a challenging ambition, since it means grappling with the complexity, uncertainty and trade-offs inherent in large scale, closely coupled, socio-ecological systems, but policy and land use decisions (such as natural flood protection measures) are often best made at such a scale.

This Conversation will include inspirational models, using these as a springboard for a broader discussion of the subject, addressing obstacles along the way and how to overcome them.

CHAIR:

Lucy Filby, Head of Land & Forestry Transition, South of Scotland Enterprise

SPEAKERS:

Andrew Williams, Local Programme Manager, Verture

Clare Cooper, Co-Founder & Co-Director, Bioregioning Tayside

Lizzie Williams, Regional Land Use Partnership (RLUP) manager, NW2045

A shop window in a city at night. The building is quite old, and there are drainpipes and cables coming down either side of the shop window. There's a flat above the shop, and there's a light on in one window. There are red, old-fashioned wrought-iron railings outside the shop window. The shop door says "WELCOME TO KK" and there's a sign reading "Sorry we're OPEN".

Above the shop window is a set of lights spelling out letters, set in front of a heart and under an arch of stars. The letters read

THE CITY IS WILDER THAN YOU THINK
AND KINDER THAN YOU THINK. IT IS A
VALLEY AND YOU ARE A HORSE IN IT
IT IS A HOUSE AND YOU ARE A
