Old hemp or flax retting ponds can still be found here and there in Britain too, often on remnants of common land away from settlements. Soaking the crop to separate the fibre was an intensely polluting activity, forbidden in or near village water supplies.

Why did an unknown informant tell John Leland that the mythical Wade was the owner of Mulgrave Castle and was buried near neolithic standing stones nearby on his tour 1535-8? Bigod was owner then but in trouble due to Pilgrimage of Grace. #OnePlaceWednesday
