When people use generative AI instead of a human proofreader, the very successful marketing of AI as actual intelligence means that more people are prepared to sacrifice their own style & their own quirks for the sake of a clockwork oracle that doesn't know anything but which replicates other texts.

NEW: OpenAI took 20 million ChatGPT responses and had one of its experts search for chunks of text—specifically chunks of 25 words in a row- that were identical between ChatGPT’s responses and a news article. They found more than 400,000 of these 25-word overlaps between ChatGPT and our articles.

I guess in sum: i get that folks want more prestige (and funding!) for older pasts, but i worry when we start leaning hard on continuity and teleology and emotional connection to get there becauae I've seen how pasts are politicised in Europe and it's really ugly 6/6

Leaning into ancestors and deep histories might well connect with europeans who want to see themselves as having deep roots in small ethno-territories, but it's a disservice to the weirdness, complexity and dynamism of the European past and it reinforces a lot of bad 19th c politics. My 2p 5/

Some people are asking if there were any "AI optimists." Many students would say something about how AI can be valuable for some things. But I was asking how it effects their education. In my small sample, no, nobody really described it as *improving* their education.
