I am just gonna go ahead and say the Boston Globe bar story wildly misses the mark for me. It seems to serve no other point than to gawk and humiliate. There's no news. There's no wider theme. It's a diversion piece, but cruel

I think it's cool that all political parties like to go "I DON'T TRUST THE PUBLIC FACTS" when it's convenient to their narrative. We have reams of data from government and private sources, along with endless anecdotes of people negotiating down their rent over the last two years. but whatever man

Philosophers often bring up the "principle of charity": a willingness to assume good faith in an interlocutor and treat them accordingly. It's good to do in many circumstances. But it is worth formulating a principle of not being a fucking mark. If not during the rise of fascism, then when? 12/

A decade ago I was offered a job. The pay was the same from my current employer, the evening hours were the same, and the duties — writing multiple web stories a night for a regional news outlet — were the same. But they seemed to believe in me, and so I bet on myself. Grateful I did every day.

This is why a one-year pause on datacentre builds in the city of Hamilton makes sense. Without loopholes or exceptions. A snippet from my comments to #HamOnt city council earlier this week.

The extent to which it sometimes feels like facts don't matter anymore is tbh disheartening. Everyone thinks about the big stuff w/ Trump and stuff but it plays out on such a smaller scale all over the place all the time now

Canada and the UK are banning children and young teens from using Facebook, which as far as I can tell is kind of like protecting them from bad gender influences by forbidding them from watching Three's Company reruns on Betamax.

it's not merely that billionaires, let alone a nazi trillionaire, are a moral and ethical failure of society, it's that they are an active and present danger to society, a form of unchecked power that directly threatens everyone and everything, devastating humanity by whim and flight of fancy

John Ojijatekha Brant-Sero is one of those characters, when you're exploring archives, who don't neatly fit into 'hero' or 'villain' but are more interesting because of that. The handsome man from Six Nations, a descendant of Joseph Brant, adopted several personas in his life: scientist, lecturer, linguist, Shakespearean actor, orator, and womanizer. With his fluency in English, the self-taught Brant-Sero struck a chord with London’s men of science. In 1900 he read a paper before the British Association for the Advancement of Science. He became so highly regarded that articles about him appeared that year in the column “ People talked about” in Leslie’s Weekly. The next year he was elected a fellow of the Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland, but he resigned in 1902. His lecture tours in England attracted enthusiastic crowds. On 13 Feb. 1902, for example, he spoke to an audience of 1,311 in Liverpool on “Canada and the Indians” and used musical and lantern illustrations. he went on to do lecture tours and performing Shakespeare on stage, and acquiring several women partners, including wives, whose abandonment, possibly saw him doing prison time. He passed away in London, England, in 1914.

News release: @guyfelicella.bsky.social returning proclamation awarded to him by Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim after Sim and ABC councillors’ move to block downtown OPS. “Not worth the paper it’s printed on.”
Vancouver, BC — On Thursday, nearly two years after receiving it, well-known recovery advocate Guy Felicella will return the proclamation awarded to him by Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim, which named May 29, 2024, as “Guy Felicella Day.”

“The mayor named that day after me to recognize my work advocating for both harm reduction and recovery, supporting families dealing with addiction, and inspiring students across the city with the story of my recovery from addiction and homelessness,” said Felicella. “As much as that proclamation meant to me then, I don’t want it anymore.

“Mayor Sim and his ABC majority have demonstrated that they do not understand what it takes to recover from toxic illicit drugs, or the work required to save lives. That proclamation is not worth the paper it’s printed on. That’s why I’ll be returning it to City Hall.”

I have loved watching Sen̓áḵw rise
A scene at the beach with tall grass in the foreground, a driftwood log, and sand. On the left is a public art piece that looks like a big set of metal ribs/semi-circles on the sand. Across False Creek, three residential towers rise above the trees. Cranes removed, they’ll be ready for occupancy soon. Sen̓áḵw is a development project on 10.5-acres of Squamish Nation land located on Kits Point adjacent to Vanier Park.

I get called less by journalists since the moral panic against harm reduction got started a couple years back. Even the good ones stand a little further back. Plus, we can no longer get meetings with cabinet ministers. These are clearly the least important metrics of backlash, but there it is.
