On the 9th anniversary of the day after the Brexit vote, here’s @mjrobbins.com to cheer us all up. Not. Well worth reading in full nonetheless! open.substack.com/pub/martinro...
Screenshot from linked article reads:

“The public could not give a crap about left versus right, about abstract political debates, about which minister is going to lose their job in the next reshuffle. There has been an absolute massive failure across politics - among the politicians themselves and the circus that covers them - to grasp and talk about the issues that matter to ordinary people in a serious way. To do the very basics of delivery. HS2 has become the ur-example of this national festival of incompetence.

Britain isn't building, isn't executing, and unless we can change this we will become a poorer country, our children will grow up poorer still, jobs and investment will dry up, resentment and anger will grow, and the 2030s will be a dark, dark time of rage and populism'. This is the most important issue in British politics right now, and if you still don't understand that with Reform nudging 30% in the polls, public services failing and the national mood grimmer than it's been for a generation, then I honestly don't know what to tell you.”

"It is not just lunacy. It is wicked." Martin Wolf on how Trump's tariffs will damage the world: www.ft.com/content/d96d...
The debate over whether to take Trump literally or seriously is over. He has now learnt how to be the tyrant he always wished to be. That took a while. But, with the help he has received, he is there. His administration is engaged in a comprehensive assault on the American republic and the global order it created. Under attack domestically are the state, the rule of law, the role of the legislature, the role of the courts, the commitment to science and the independence of the universities. All these were the pillars on which US freedom and prosperity rested. Now, he is destroying the liberal international order. Soon, I presume, Trump will be invading countries, as he proceeds to restore the age of empires.

Trump: "Tariffs have come in and every country has called us... If we asked most of these countries to do us a favour, they would have said no. Now they'll do anything for us... Tariffs give us great power". This is what really motivates Trump on tariffs - not trade, but corruption & quid pro quo.

"The imperialism has no clothes." Terrific piece on JD Vance in Greenland, by @timothysnyder.bsky.social: open.substack.com/pub/snyder/p.... Final paragraph below.
So consider. The US is is 24th in the world in the happiness rankings. Not bad. But hi Denmark is number two (after Finland). On a scale of 1 to 100, Freedom House ranks Denmark 97 and the US 84 on freedom — and the US will drop a great deal this year. An American is about ten times more likely to be incarcerated than a Dane. Danes have access to universal and essentially free health care; Americans spend a huge amount of money to be sick more often and to be treated worse when they are. Danes on average live four years longer than Americans. In Denmark university education is free; the average balance owed by the tens of millions of Americans who hold student debt in the US is about $40,000. Danish parents share a year of paid parental leave. In the US, one parent might get twelve weeks of unpaid leave. Denmark has children’s story writer Hans Christian Andersen. The US has children’s story writer JD Vance. American children are about twice as likely as Danish children to die before the age of five.
