Over the last week I've been messing around with the recently added Pyrowave codec in Steam remote play. It's an open source video codec that throws compression out the window in exchange for latency. If you are a freak with wired Ethernet, this may be for you. aftermath.site/pyrowave-ste...

Steam's Pyrowave Update To Remote Play Chases Latency At All Costs
The addition of the Pyrowave codec in the latest Steam beta is a potential boon for people that love streaming locally and directly via Ethernet.

the first tip in WSJ's "costco hacks" clickbait is "have you considered buying gold bars and diamonds"
Go for the luxury goods

Part of how Costco lures shoppers to spend big is by negotiating steep discounts on luxury items, from vacation packages to jewelry. As a shopper whose splurges occasionally extend to discounted gadgets and hot dogs, the Costco faithful have implored me to think bigger. Much bigger.

By that I mean buying gold bars (roughly $4400) instead of golden raisins, and fine wine ($399 for six different Bordeaux vintages from Château Giscours) instead of green grapes in 3-pound clamshells.

Or purchasing diamond jewelry, which several readers extolled.

Victoria Summers from El Dorado Hills, Calif., told me that her husband, Rob, surprised her with a three-carat diamond band for their 30th anniversary. Along with some cat food, Greg Werhane of Colorado Springs, Colo., bought a wedding ring (ranging from $274 to $10,999.)

AI has lost the Mandate of Heaven I’m afraid. WSJ saying it’s a “when” the ai bubble bursts. SNL dabbing on their biggest names for being weird. FT says 50% of chips sold in 2026 and 2027 have nowhere to go. Hundreds of billions short on revenue for even 10% ROIC. A disaster.

the fun social democrat policy person thing to lean into is that AI is unprofitable and it's good that the capitalist class is subsidizing this technology, which doesn't seem to really contend with 1. who ultimately owns it and 2. every other externality that private equity is profiting from here.

Notes on Mold and floodlights
Ok, getting hang of taking notes, kinda nice to write down thoughts

-noticed different types of light changes the Mold's Growth
-did some experiments, modified our floodlights, hopefully can slow mold down w/it

notes after experiment:
-mold started growing faster and maybe stronger
-it likes the floodlights
-we fucked up

The WAR ON WALKING has taken many forms around the world. It’s often as simple as how we signal who space is and isn’t for. Once our eyes are opened to all the ways we’ve prioritized cars over people, we can’t unsee it. Frustrating photo contributed by @stadsplanering.bsky.social. #WarOnWalking
Background photo from North Macedonia, where “sidewalks are mostly used to park cars” as explained by photo contributor Carl-Henrik Barnekow. Text says “Don’t buy the lie that there’s a war on cars. They’ve been waging a war on walking for a century.” Via the Urban Truth Collective. #WarOnCars #UrbanTruth

incredible Youtube comment on a The Prodigy video for Charly
STILL blasting this in 2023! I started listening to Prodigy during the Bosnian war in 1992 as a teenager, and here is a little Prodigy related anecdote from the war later on, in 1993... During the siege of Sarajevo I lived right at the front lines, and late at night, Serbian soldiers would sing their old folk and "Chetnik" songs driving us nuts, so we went around for days collecting car batteries from damaged cars, speakers and sound systems from destroyed cars and apartments, and we put together a loud system with multiple speakers in 4 different apartments in a destroyed building (in the part of Sarajevo we called "Little Hiroshima" due to the scale of destruction). The only albums we had were Prodigy's Experience, Metallica by Metallica, Guns N Roses' Use Your Illusion, and a couple of Yugo rock albums. So when they start singing that caveman stuff, we would blast Prodigy's Experience as loud as possible, shutting them up. Unfortunately, car batteries get drained quickly, so we had a badly damaged Opel hatchback with a solid little engine that we started whenever we had some fuel to burn (we used oil from old machines too) just to charge the batteries. Been blasting it ever since! RIP Keith
