Over-the-counter pet flea treatments could be banned under new UK rules
Exclusive: ministers consider restricting pesticide-based treatments, which can get into waterways and harm wildlife Pet owners across the UK could be banned from buying flea treatment for cats and dogs under new government rules. Ministers have begun an eight-week consultation on letting only veterinary practitioners or pharmacists give out the potent, pesticide-based flea treatments, to ensure “correct usage”. What should the Government prioritise when tackling its welfare trilemma (means-tesing winter fuel payments, cutting disability benefits and the persistence of the two child limit)? @ruthcurtice.bsky.social‬ considers the options ⤵️ buff.ly/5ibPBVM
"The noise is in inverse proportion to impact on living standards. The panic has been most frenzied on winter fuel payments, and this is where the PM has now sounded a partial retreat. But the case for restoring universal payments is weak. When Gordon Brown introduced them in 1997, three-in-ten pensioners were in poverty. Since then, pensioner poverty has halved, and seniors are today less likely to be in poverty than the wider population and half as likely as children. "

Genuinely astonishing that TVCA is maintaining this falsehood about the Teesworks deal. They're depending on councillors who are responsible for scrutiny not knowing the detail. 🔗 teesside.thelead.uk/p/tvca-chief...
In papers published ahead of next week’s TVCA cabinet meeting, TVCA persists with the falsehood that this was in exchange for the developers taking on additional liabilities in relation to the redevelopment of the former site of Redcar steelworks.

In an update to board members on the South Tees Development Corporation, the report by STDC COO John Barnes says the equity was transferred to Corney and Musgrave, who agreed to: “Take on the obligation and risk associated with the remediation of the remainder of the site.”

However, the government-commissioned Tees Valley Review into governance of TVCA and the Teesworks project, published in January 2024, clearly states “the legal documentation doesn’t impose any such obligation on [Teesworks Ltd] to undertake remediation and there is no evidence that [Teesworks Ltd] has yet done so.”

I generally like David Gauke's writing, but this is really poor on energy prices and net zero I'm afraid. Not going to rebut the whole thing, but a couple of quick points... www.newstatesman.com/politics/uk-...
Businesses are increasingly vocal about the uncompetitiveness of energy prices. It has long been the case that Europe has higher energy prices than the US because the US has embraced fracking. President Trump is going to inflict many wounds on the US economy, but his “drill, baby, drill” approach to energy policy will lower the cost for US businesses further.

Even in the European context, our energy costs are high. Industries such as steelmaking and chemicals are increasingly priced out of the UK for this reason. Nor is this just a problem for established industries. Artificial Intelligence requires data centres and data centres require a lot of energy. An ambition to lead the world in AI is incompatible with high energy prices.
