Anyway, I shared all this at the dinner table and they asked if it was therapeutic. I realized it had been. I had to do so much work to make this person who loomed over my childhood someone good. Maybe it is a good exercise? Like, what would it take to make your family villain a likable character?

Despite being a huge asshole, this person was a bad ass, and interesting and funny. That made the hatred hurt more, when it still mattered to me. So I made my version all the positives they had plus compassionate and generous (though not nice, that would be too far). People love that character.

When I was on my third draft or so, I asked a friend of a friend who was working on ML whether he would turn off a system if he thought it had become conscious, and he was horrified at the suggestion. But I'm guessing most of the world didn't know these people thought that way.
