Exactly. I somehow avoided the Charlie Kirk one, and didn't know about the video at the time. I've also not watched George Floyd, though have responded robustly to what happened. Now we have warning....utterly sickening.

Great - and bleak - question. It's going to be very hard to avoid unless we stay off all media channels for some time. I feel like that's the only choice I have. Banning it outside of the US would be quite a statement.

Practice until you see yourself in the cruelest person on Earth, in the child starving, in a political prisoner. Until you recognize yourself in everyone in the supermarket, on the street corner, in a concentration camp, on a leaf, in a dewdrop. See with the whole of your being. ~ Thich Nhat Hanh

The story of Jason Arday is the story of James Orr. Of the ideology which has found a foothold in Cambridge University, fostering the sorts of ideas that formed the undercurrents – sometimes explicit; sometimes unconscious – against Arday. I returned to my alma mater for an in-depth exploration 👇

For the record, climate change is not going to kill us all in a few years and neither is AI, but that shouldn’t be the metric by which we judge how bad something is.

Protest that endures, I think, is moved by a hope far more modest than that of public success: namely, the hope of preserving qualities in one's own heart and spirit that would be destroyed by acquiescence. Wendell Berry, What Are People For?

If a white person uses the term "woke" I realize that they are either a malicious asshole, maliciously complacent, or reflexively unthinking, and it's only a matter of time before they reveal which one it is. One good way to find out is to explain what "woke" actually means and note the reaction.

On loss and abandonment.
One of the most common fears is that of being abandoned. . . . The archetype of abandonment is associated with death, suffocation, stagnation, symbiosis, and the fear of incorporation. Change and growth, however, always entail loss. In an assault from without, the self is threatened and anticipates defeat or annihilation. In an assault from within, the integrity of the self comes into question. The growth and differentiation of any new parts of the personality entail mourning for what will no longer be. During this process, the individual moves from periods of calm to periods of unsettling oscillation. These developments are simultaneously affective and cognitive. The pain of loss brings growth, transformation, and renewal in its wake. Each new stage of life necessitates a separation from the previous stage through mourning. The mourning itself has historical antecedents in the individual's characteristic or stylistic way of responding to loss.
