![One of the most common fears is that of being abandoned. . . . The archetype of abandonment is associated with death, suffocation, stagnation, symbiosis, and the fear of incorporation. Change and growth, however, always entail loss. In an assault from without, the self is threatened and anticipates defeat or annihilation. In an assault from within, the integrity of the self comes into question. The growth and differentiation of any new parts of the personality entail mourning for what will no longer be. During this process, the individual moves from periods of calm to periods of unsettling oscillation. These developments are simultaneously affective and cognitive. The pain of loss brings growth, transformation, and renewal in its wake. Each new stage of life necessitates a separation from the previous stage through mourning. The mourning itself has historical antecedents in the individual's characteristic or stylistic way of responding to loss.
