One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

"By using AI, tasks like essays that used to take hours can be completed in minutes!" Sure, like how if I arrive at the gym and immediately go for a shower, my workout is done in record time. And if I throw my sandwiches straight in the bin, I can finish my lunch in under 10 seconds.

The true workout for my heart preceded all that, however, when the refs organised the teams. These were two kind and affable young coaches who work at the sports centre. Their true youth was not apparent to me until some idle football chat on the touchline revealed that neither of them – both Arsenal fans – were alive when Arsenal won the title in 2004. As my weary bones turned to dust beneath my skin, I realised they were considerably closer in age to my son than they were to me.
This might therefore lend forgiveness to their team selection policy, which could only have been devised by an amoral child, and which unfolded in precisely the way it did when I was a kid; namely, two boys selected to pick players one by one from the group until two, ostensibly equal, teams are populated. The issue with this, quite obviously, is that it institutes a ranking system for every child on the pitch, kicking off a fun day’s football with a soul-destroying popularity contest for no reason whatsoever.Yes, my son was one of the last picked, which made rational sense given he’d never played a football match before. And yes, my son didn’t appear to mind this at all, so I am likely overthinking the effects of this ruthless system and making it all about my own feelings. I am, doubtless, a soft, modern, overprotective dad, bringing his own childhood traumas to bear on something my son doesn’t care that much about. So, I’ll just say that the sight of him hopping on the spot, hands outstretched, pleading to be picked while being passed over time and again, made me want to shoot someone with a harpoon, and I’ll leave it at that.

The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.

To those who somehow don't seem to understand: Which part of authorising weapons sales to a state committing genocide, banning the protest movement trying to stop these sales, using the RAF to provide surveillance flights for Israel and providing major diplomatic and media support is NOT complicity?

Reform has already enjoyed several years of support from a loss-making TV channel whose main function seems to be to give money and favourable coverage to its MPs. The government has done nothing about this. It's probably a more effective way of spending millions than Farage will manage.

Tweets from Steve Kastenbaum

Mayor Mamdani was the only senior elected official who stayed at the 9/11 memorial ceremony at the WTC until the end. It started at 8:40 AM, and concluded close to 12:30 PM. Most of the other current electeds left at various times. Former Mayors Bloomberg & Giuliani stayed.

Mamdani stayed until the end of the memorial ceremony at which point he was seen talking with 9/11 victims' family members. All of the other senior elected officials left the 9/11 Memorial before the reading of the names concluded.

The source tells me that V.P. Vance was the first to leave the VIP area, and other elected officials began "schmoozing." At some point, Mayor Giuliani's people started "bringing people over to talk with him." CORRECTION:I used photos in a previous similar post that were from 2025

On Andy Burnham's sudden bout of shyness. thecritic.co.uk/sanc...
The close of his statement was an appeal to our better natures. If we were going to ask Israelis and Palestinians to live side-by-side, he said, Britain also had to be a place where “people of all faiths and none have a right to live without prejudice or fear.” Listening to him was Andy Burnham, who has been strangely absent from our public debate for the last few days. In August, we couldn’t move for social media clips from the prime minister, standing on a ladder to discuss his first job, or sitting in a pub to rate bar snacks. But faced with masked thugs trying to shut down British ports over the weekend, Burnham seems to have lost the password for his phone. For a decade now, Britain has had a series of leaders apparently paralysed by the fear that if they say that racism is bad, they’ll be voted out. It would be nice to get one who had a slightly higher opinion of us.

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.
