Another 10 or 15 people join the meeting via Zoom. The plan is to go clockwise, sharing views on the masking decision and the financial future of the bar. Each person has two minutes to speak. It begins with a calming breath exercise.

I found these two ads next to each other in the Los Angeles Times for November 8, 1903. Two different company names, one address. Someone spent an interesting winter in 1903 working at a sketchy office selling sketchy sex vacuums. Isn't that a wonderful piece of history to know?

The reason there used to be fewer people on the street is that there used to be mental institutions, poorhouses, SROs, and other places that folks who were down and out could exist. Most of these places were REALLY bad, so instead of being improved, they were removed and replaced with nothing.

I would argue that the US has been in a condition of political violence since about 1995. We've seen a pretty steady stream of right-wing bombings, murders, and mass shootings since then, most of them VERY EXPLICIT about their political motivations. However, we've resisted seeing and naming it.

Old comic I think of every once in a while for reasons.

A four panel comic about how it feels when people praise someone who you think is kind of terrible. Not because of their work but because of their actions, which you observed in person. I know there are plenty of people who feel the same way about me and I get it, but I think there's a difference between obnoxious and/or rude and thief, career killer or creeper/menace. And I wasn't completely kidding about the "perhaps he's changed" bit, because I know some folks have for the better and I hope I have. I also thought someone else had. C’est la vie. Hard to argue.

Being on Bluesky doesn't deliver delirious highs, but it also doesn't lead to crushing lows. The Post, a truly immoral scumbag tabloid that is simultaneously the most skilled tabloid journalism publication in America in a way that we can all learn from, ran the story, and then it was picked up over the next few days by other right wing outlets making essentially the same “hey this left winger is a rich kid” joke, and then yesterday the story was picked up by the New York Times, which had profiled Gordillo earlier, and once that happened it instantly became acceptable fodder for non-right-wing reporters and pundits. This is a textbook case of how to shepherd a shallow partisan smear into the mainstream news cycle. You may find it distasteful, but you should admire its efficacy. Any competent cutthroat political communicator must be able to replicate this process on demand.

(When I worked at Gawker, we frequently played a similar but less political role in this general process, by writing about stories that the Times was interested in but considered disreputable, which would then allow them to write follow-ups framed as “People are talking about this thing,” which provides them an entry point to feed their readers salacious news while still maintaining an analytical, hands-off pose. Once you understand this dynamic you will see it all the time.)
