The very ideas of “process” and “form” come from centuries of attempts to describe what ppl do with their minds, art, etc., and were extended to cover machines by analogy and implication, to now say oh no those words only describe computational machines is ridiculous

this is exactly my opinion. there may be a superstrate of extremely difficult and unique safety problems around AI, but the substrate is simply that no one takes basic precautions seriously becasue they imagine (or pretend to imaigne) that it is futile, and basic precautions slow down launches.

Something big may be happening: Trump's world-historical misrule may be creating the conditions for the emergence of a coalition similar to the one that ousted Viktor Orban earlier this year: Anti-corruption, anti-authoritarian, pro-democracy. I made this case here: newrepublic.com/article/2161...

National Science Foundation Diverted $1.4 Billion in Science Funds Mandated by Congress
The move, affecting about one-fifth of the National Science Foundation’s primary research budget, is the latest sign of how the White House is asserting more control over grants.

One of Musks breeding allies has apparently called it quits. I know I keep harping on this but imagine the media coverage if the top donor to the Democrats was a billionaire with a baby breeding cult? And yet the media has mostly ignored this part of Musk’s story.

I am still curious why this model seems to work for app aggregators like SetApp. At some level I wonder if there will be another round of appification, potentially making a phone or computer Notification Center a news roundup area ... of course that would involve refinements to notifications

This is the $64T question. The usual players sell standardized services, and demand data in return as well; local players wonder if they can't do what they want with bespoke models that keep data local. Meanwhile, making AI a regulated utility would be too good for people and bad for tech lords, so—

Right but this is also why local, vetted, not primarily for profit AI, perhaps branded in association with orgs of which it is a service (imagine “AARP doctor-finding assistance”) is promising, where imperial big tech AI is not. Compare social media, where they also deny us what would be so useful

Something I haven’t seen really elaborated on in the discourse of Effective Altruists taking over everything from the AI industry to US national tech policy is that this produces a deeply insular intellectual monoculture that is dominant but isolated from other non EA-ist intellectual thought.
