SEX PURGE SPOILER ZONE: IN THIS SECTION I EXPLAIN THE SEX PURGE LORE

If you’re reading this, you almost certainly have no plans to see the Sex Purge Movie, and you just want to get a summary of the weird world depicted therein. The recent marketing made it seem like this information would be delivered in some kind of Soulsy piece-things-together-based-on-background-graffiti-and-vague-cryptic-references sort of way, but no, the movie stops at several points to explain the nature and history of the Sex Burge in pretty bizarre, expository, awful, As You Well Know dialogue. So:

A few years ago, the Democrats ran a centrist candidate that a lot of “one issue voters” did not turn out for.

This gave Republicans the presidency and congress, but not a 2/3 majority in the senate.

No one ran on doing a Ban on Premarital Sex, but Republicans realized they had an opportunity to try and ram one through

In the name of Bipartisanship, some Democrats agreed to compromise with Republicans on their Abstinence Mandate: instead of an absolute ban, there would be one Sex Purge Night. Also, even though officially all extramarital sex would be banned, enforcement would basically only pertain to straight extramarital sex.

Further, on Sex Purge Night, it is illegal to not use a condom. If you have sex without a condom, the police will find out and will arrest you. We see, on screen, a man say out loud that he has been arrested many times for refusing to wear a condom on Sex Purge Night. Public Indecency, however, seems to have been decriminalized.

KY hands out free lube on the street on Sex Purge Night, but no one hands out condoms. Indeed, condoms are barely stocked by any vendors, and so prices skyrocket to $200 a condom as the night goes on.

Every American (and possibly every visitor to the country; there are British characters in this movie, but it’s not clear if they’re citizens or just visiting) receives a nanotech tattoo from a Palantir-esque corporation. Each individual gets to pick the tattoo design. The tattoo alerts the police if you have straight sex, based on analysis of the hormones in your body and the hormones in the body of any proximate person of the opposite sex. It uses 5G to call the cops on you.

Finally saw the Odyssey after the discourse and mostly came away liking it, rating a little below Oppenheimer, a movie with similar themes. I’m looking past the very clunky dialogue at the end and chewing on whether the movie actually thinks civ will rise again and their mistakes will be forgotten

I agree with chunks of this (there's a real conversation about current short fiction trends and tastes) but if I asked a market what they were going to do about AI and how they would respond to publishing it by accident, I would not be satisfied by "we're too niche and weird for that to happen"
