winter burn

this is how an evergreen dies of thirst.
the water is there.
under six inches of frozen ground
the roots,
surrounded by it.
all winter
the needles keep giving
what the roots
cannot replace.
first
they turn gold.
we call them beautiful.
then brown.
by spring
everyone can see
the brown.
underground
nothing
was ever missing.

I effing despise RFK Jr. I had a cancer caused by HPV that had a massive impact on my life. I would have loved to have a vaccine that could have prevented all of that and whatnot. Yet that fool has claimed that HPV vaccines themselves cause cancer and he’s making bank on that lie and others.

How the online left reacts to news like the Cornell 7 confirms to me that they are still not ready to reckon with the fact that they need to stop settling for punitive justice against individuals in the wake of a systemic failure. Real justice looks like change, not like punishment.

In 2024 one of my closest friends experienced a traumatic attack that nearly cost her life. This poem is born from the rage that her attack was never properly investigated and women everywhere aren't believed. From my upcoming book. #howtospeakoutpoems

Parthenon at the Siege of the Acropolis

Her body is a temple

the detective reminds her,
as if temples were never
looted and plundered,

as if holy sites were never seized
by the hands of men unholy enough
to scar the landscape and raze
the hair on the nape of her neck.

Her body is a temple

as if temples were never burned
because they couldn’t be had,

as if her sanctity can coexist with his sacrilege.

Her body is a temple

as if there are no tourists pathologizing
the ruins of the Parthenon and ogling
the exposed cliffs of the acropolis
as too revealing to have survived the siege,

as if everyone else’s doubts are evidence
that the bruising on the back of her knees
is explained by the length of her skirt.

Her body is a temple

as if temples were never trespassed upon
by men who had no right to be there,

as if the presence of her invader was enough
to sacrifice her innocence to presume his.

I 100% agree with the observation of how the technology works - Google almost certainly regularly pulls GIS data from the GNIS and updates its own maps database, entirely automated. However the fact that they don’t override this when someone is being obviously ridiculous _is a policy choice_.
