The posture of Knowingness which is quick to assert that actually there is no sense things are getting worse when the state livestreams an execution because it's analogous to cop killings of the past is very stupid. You can and should notice changes.

Think about Andy Beshear, out there holding back the tide in Kentucky. He represents a strain of the Democratic Party that you see in places like Kansas, etc. There is simply not a comparable UK politician.

a little louder for the cheap seats in the back
One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.
For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.

Tillis is obviously a fucking idiot, but fighting Ruhle to a draw on these questions is just black belt level rhetorical judo. If her body language is any indication, she knows what's happening and is not a good enough interviewer to stop it.

U.S. forces are retreating. That's what this means. "Pulled out and returned to their home stations in the U.S. as potential Iranian threats raise base security concerns" is a fancy way of saying the Iranian military has the U.S. military in retreat. This is unbelievably embarrassing.

Just a reminder: Tillis persuaded the woman Hegseth allegedly raped to come forward with her story, and told her that if she did, it would sink the nomination. She did. At great risk to herself. Tillis then cast the deciding vote for Hegseth. Because he’s a goddamned coward.

To wit: it’s not a “fever” if it never breaks! That is, the ‘fever’ metaphor was only ever attractive because it entailed a radicalized GOP reverting/changing through almost no political effort by Democrats. This is a legitimate political movement, and to that exact extent, it has to be defeated.

What's funny about this is that @whstancil.bsky.social thinks it shows that people have been brain poisoned by social media in their antipathy towards the economy and anxiety about the future. Don't these people know that cable was way worse than streaming and median wages actually rose in 2021?

Sorry, but the level of angst people had about the Great Recession was too low. Had it been higher, Obama, et al, would’ve pushed for an appropriate stimulus. Would never happen today, cf. the Covid stimulus payments. Turns out we’re doing objectively better, notwithstanding social media.

As this interest has developed for you, I've been surprised you haven't considered a M2M or bespoke tailor for one of these pieces. Korea and Japan are where the energy in those spaces are, too. A tweedy green herringbone blazer would be a great first commission. Not that you asked, of course.

My almost unfalsifiable view is that, if you got to question either of them with any degree of rigor, you'll find out they would've voted for Socrates's death sentence. The Middlemarch version of this is that I'm convinced David Frum thinks Bulstrode is the novel's ill-used hero.

I simply do not believe you can take Middlemarch into your heart and launch the Iraq War. Accordingly, my most lowercase-c conservative view is that 1) below is false. Whatever else you can say about Rumsfeld, Frum, et al, you can't say they were 'liberally educated'.

...about Watchmen or The Leftovers, they have a singular point of view that their entire being is bent on expressing. It's a joy to puzzle through them, to feel mystified and experience the uncanny. The basic assumption that the audience *wants* that (set aside deserves it) is nowhere in Lanterns.

And infuriating as that is, the worst part is that that dynamic is literally the opposite of what made me such a Lindelof diehard. His shows are so strange and obscure and actively spurn any form of fan service, towards the end of telling the story *he* wants to tell. Whatever else you can say...

...writers made this choice because they don't trust the audience to know that the Sheriff's name is actually Kerry. There are many more. And to this point, that's my real objection: my overwhelming impression throughout is of being disrespected, like they're writing for people who won't notice.
