An insanely beautiful couple of days hiking the volcanic cinder cones of northern Arizona. I've seen coyote, pronghorn, roadrunner, and a jackrabbit.

Have you ever planned time off work weeks in advance with the goal of hiking a bunch only to have persistent rain every day? No? Me neither, but it is raining and I would be hiking some cinder cones if it stopped.

2500 tons of salt. Sent me to some time-wasting searches on whether Great Lakes bulk carriers were already carrying similar weights of coal, grain, iron ore, etc. Maybe not quite, but close. The biggest 20th century lakers (many built in Sturgeon Bay, WI) could carry over 80,000 tons of cargo.

I spent some time poking around the Ferris Fire footprint. As you would expect for a fire burning over several days, what it leaves behind is a mix of severities but ultimately more acres of less toasty than more toasty.
