Wetlands can be carbon sinks or sources, depending on management strategies. A study of CO2 and methane fluxes in the Everglades highlights the role of freshwater flows in minimizing methane emissions and the power of mangroves to store carbon. In PNAS: ow.ly/tfIn50Yl7yN

The Methane spike in the early 2020’s has been explained in two new studies. A combination of weakened atmospheric removal and increased emissions from warming wetlands, rivers, lakes, and agricultural land are to blame. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...  www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... #methane

Why methane surged in the atmosphere during the early 2020s

Are you working with #OpenData to advance #freshwater #biogeochemistry? Consider submitting an abstract to share your science in our special session at #2026SFS! Organized by Ashif H Abir, Wil Wollheim, me, & Kelly Aho @kellyaho.bsky.social. Abstracts due 16 Jan 2026. www.sfsannualmeeting.org 💧🌎🧪
Abstracts due: 16 January 2026

Special Session: Advances in freshwater biogeochemistry using open data across networks of sites

Conveners: Ashif Hasan Abir (UNH), Wil Wollheim (UNH), Erin Hotchkiss (VT), & Kelly Aho (BU)

With the increasing amount of data from research networks, expanding analytical capabilities and open science policies, there is a paradigm shift from single-site to macro-scale analyses incorporating many ecosystems to tackle knowledge gaps in freshwater biogeochemistry at regional to global scales. We welcome submissions that leverage publicly available data (continuous sensor measurements, field sampling or combination of both) collected across different spatial and temporal scales from multiple sites to advance freshwater biogeochemistry. We are particularly interested in studies utilizing established sensor and measurement networks such as the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON), Long-term Ecological Research (LTER) networks, Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network (GLEON), and Critical Zone Observatories (CZO) for cross-scale studies. We welcome studies adopting interdisciplinary approaches that use standardized observations, coupled terrestrial and water measurements, high frequency sampling, process-based and/or machine learning models, or any combination of these approaches. Cross-scale studies addressing biogeochemical processes at the interface of terrestrial and aquatic systems such as riparian corridors, hyporheic zones, and different freshwater ecosystems are also encouraged. Throughout this session, we hope to stimulate innovative ideas, approaches and discussions to push our knowledge in freshwater biogeochemistry. To learn more, visit: www.sfsannualmeeting.org

Multiple Early Career Faculty Positions in Ecology

The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Notre Dame invites applications for multiple, tenure-track assistant professor positions that will enhance existing institutional excellence in ecology. We are searching broadly for creative and collaborative individuals (1) working at any spatial scale, from local to global, in any system, (2) studying any level of biological organization, from genes to ecosystems, and (3) using any mode of inference, from empirical to theoretical. Applicants should demonstrate research excellence that crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries; ongoing growth in the department will emphasize new hires that use quantitative and/or integrative approaches to study ecological processes. Postdoctoral experience is desirable in applicants. Successful candidates will engage with and benefit from UNDERC, Notre Dame’s 8000-acre environmental field station and home to NEON’s Great Lakes domain, superb on-campus chemical and genomic analytical facilities, an experimental research facility located close to campus, cross-disciplinary interactions through multiple centers and institutes including the Environmental Change Initiative, and a unique Interdisciplinary Graduate Training Program in Environment and Society. New faculty will benefit from Notre Dame’s recent campus-wide Strategic Framework that included the Just Transformations to Sustainability Initiative. Modern research facilities exist in a new environmental research building, which opened in 2025.
