A few days ago I came across a late flying damselfly, a male Boreal Bluet. On a warm summer's day, he would be bright sky blue, but on a cool Yukon autumn day (9C) it was a dark grey-violet! This is a common response to cold in both bluets and the much larger blue darner dragonflies. #Odonata

Wow, big day for conservation entomology publications! This review summarizes the known and suspected causes of insect declines. Spoiler: habitat loss and fragmentation, pesticides, invasive species, and climate change still implicated as the most significant drivers. doi.org/10.1093/aesa...
Image/Table from publication: Summary of the direct drivers of insect biodiversity change. Impact on insect biodiversity reflects the general direction of responses relative to an unmodified reference state. The drivers listed down the left side are: Agricultural intensification, Urbanization, Habitat fragmentation, Resource extraction, Water pollution, Agricultural pollution (individual-level), Agricultural pollution (population-level), Urban pollution, Garbage and solid waste, Air-borne pollutants, Light pollution, Noise pollution, Thermal pollution, Invasive plants, Invasive animals, Warming temperature (physiology), Warming temperature (phenology & distributions), Extreme climate events, Fire, Flood, Pathogens, Pathogens, Land-use change as interactive force, Climate as an interactive force. All are scored as having negative impacts, with a few (habitat fragmentation, thermal pollution, invasive plants, warming temperatures, fire, and some instances of land-use and climate having occasionally positive effects).

An outstanding review of the myriad ways insects are central to vertebrate survival. They appropriately call attention to how much we still don't know about these interactions and how to conserve them, but avoid (intentionally?) calling attention to the fact that we are included in 'vertebrates'!
