this week I've been down bandcamp rabbit holes for post metal, thrash, and ragga jungle. I like everything I've heard and generally I think I like thrash better than post metal and generally like jungle better than thrash. really enjoying this just now scaredmoneyrecords.bandcamp.com/album/smr009...

One more thing about the death penalty before going offline. As disgusted as we should be by Trump's bloodlust, we should NOT lose sight of the CENTRAL role of Democrats in upholding, expanding, and enabling this system that seems to horrify so many people right now. It really cannot be said enough.

I can't tell what 'people who have the jobs' means - if faculty, then the issue is faculty are now largely employees like any other, ie, people whose views do not steer institutions. if it means management, then they're very clear why they have the jobs, just only in private, like most employers!

I'm skeptical that the explanations would matter, since the bureaucracy isn't so much an interlocutor as a constraint and a resource drain. That can definitely be opposed, but not by convincing the bureaucrats via argument.

ICE is slamming far northern Illinois for a second day in a row. Rapid responders in Rockford say federal agents detained a group of roofing workers this morning—eight men all the way from Minnesota. Volunteers are currently trying to locate their families. From a local immigration attorney:

I give the NYT a lot of grief (well-deserved), but this is exactly how Dennis Hastert should be remembered 👇🏻
New York Times headline: Dennis Hastert, powerful politician disgraced by child abuse, dies.

Sub headline the longest serving Republican speaker of the house admitted in 2016 to abusing teenage boys decades earlier. He was 84.

They also are lying or willfully stupid and do not actually believe what they are saying because they absolutely think some content matters and they think other content is illegitimate, they just don't want to make a case for it right now, or perhaps they currently lack the confidence to do so.

NO, NYC PUBLIC LIBRARIES ARE NOT "FULLY FUNDED" despite what the influencers on social media are regurgitating. Our libraries remain UNDER-FUNDED. Library workers need to be paid MORE MONEY, we need more funds for collections, we need more funds for programming & for capital expenses.

That this is *not* the trust that has been broken astounds me. I gave feedback earlier this year on some restoring trust projects. I mentioned Cornell's president hitting a student and alum with apparently little regret as the type of damage these projects need to care about. Elite impunity matters.

Cornell Police and the County Prosecutor's office seem intent on saying, in barely concealed terms, the other is to blame. It's a system where they're both happy to be able to pass off any responsibility while preserving their authority / power / territory; something fundamental has to change.
