Tell me how Poilievre would have been much different. "Former ministers, First Nations and environmental advocates are criticizing the proposal, some calling it a more significant rollback of environmental law than was seen under former prime minister Stephen Harper." #CdnPoli
Last year, Prime Minister Mark Carney established an office tasked with fast-tracking handpicked major industrial projects. Now, he says that’s not enough. He has a new proposal on the table meant to roll out the red carpet for all projects requiring federal approval, including pipelines, mines, transmission lines and other infrastructure.

The proposal, unveiled last week, would create “federal economic zones” where certain developments can be “pre-approved,” and provide exceptions to several rules governing fossil fuel and nuclear oversight, habitat preservation, species at risk protection and major project reviews.

It would fundamentally change the way the country scrutinizes industrial development and consults with Indigenous Peoples, in some cases shifting reviews at an agency under the purview of the environment minister over to federal bodies that report to the natural resources minister.

“the government seems to be listening to these corporate voices and is moving quite fast on some very alarming moves that we view could significantly weaken the right to strike in this country.” Mark Carney IS the corporate voice. #GiftLink 🎁 #CdnPoli www.thestar.com/gift-redeem?...
OTTAWA — The Carney government is contemplating changes to Canadian labour law that several unions say aim to designate more workplaces as “essential services” and curb the right to strike while undermining collective bargaining for others.

A little-noticed discussion paper distributed April 17 seeks input from “targeted stakeholders” — employers and union representatives in federally regulated workplaces such as airlines, ports, railways, telecommunications and banking — and limits written submissions to “organizations invited by Employment and Social Development Canada.”

It says it is looking at changes that could include new mandatory collective bargaining timelines, new designations of essential services including by sector or by geographical location, and could allow earlier intervention by the federal government to mediate or order binding arbitration in order to stabilize labour conflicts.

Here's BC Premier David Eby's response to the pipeline MOU #bcpoli
Statement from Premier David Eby on the MOU between Alberta and Ottawa:

As a country, it's time to stop rewarding bad behaviour.

It cannot be the case that the projects that get prioritized in Canada are those where a Premier threatens to leave the country.

Here in B.C., we have what the rest of the world is looking for: critical minerals, natural resources, and port access. We have shovel-ready projects with real proponents, and investments that will provide good-paying jobs and funding for public services. Some of our $88 billion in prioritized projects have already reached final investment decisions creating thousands of new, high-paying jobs.

Despite this early success, our 35 additional job-creating projects need more attention from, and coordination with, Ottawa.

These 35 projects will bring jobs and prosperity to all of Canada. The federal government must work as closely with us on these projects as they work with the Government of Alberta on Premier Smith's proposed pipeline – a project that has yet to identify a proponent or a route.

Our government’s opposition to any repeal of the North Coast tanker ban has not changed.

British Columbia is a vital part of Canada. We must work together across federal-provincial lines to build this nation and to strengthen it.

I know the Prime Minister believes we can work better in partnership as well.

Next week, I’ll be meeting with the Prime Minister to bring him a list of projects we can work on for the benefit of all Canadians. We will find a path forward, together – as Canadians.

Canada is our strength. We love this country.

Danielle Smith's definition of "democracy" seems to depend entirely on whether she gets her way. #abpoli #ableg #cdnpoli
A four-panel yellow-and-black political meme featuring Alberta Premier Danielle Smith in a Drake-style approval/disapproval format.

Top left: Danielle Smith with puckered lips and an irritated expression.
Top right text: “Court requires consultation with First Nations?” followed by “Anti-democratic”.

Bottom left: Danielle Smith smiling broadly and waving.
Bottom right text: “Overriding Charter rights with the Notwithstanding Clause?” followed by “Now that’s democracy!”

The meme uses contrasting expressions and captions to criticize what it presents as a contradiction between opposing court-mandated consultation with First Nations while supporting use of the Notwithstanding Clause to override Charter rights.

But increased trade should not come at the expense of members of the Indian diaspora in Canada, especially Canadian Sikhs, who have been targeted by India’s alleged state-sanctioned transnational criminal activity. The Carney government is making a choice to prioritize trade over the public safety of Canadians. That itself is bad enough. But that the government is pretending the choice doesn’t exist in order to placate India is even worse.
