New article with @a-seewald.bsky.social: We show that patients' responses to normal diagnostic test results critically depend on the doctor's behaviour. If they are warm and competent, patients can take in such information much better and have less desire to consult other doctors or have more tests.

Our latest publication seems to have drawn some new followers! So I’d like to use the opportunity to share what our lab studies (beyond attention & inflammation). We study how what goes on in our minds can shape what happens in our bodies, and ultimately, our physical health.

Thank you @natureportfolio.nature.com for highlighting our research! 🙏 It’s really humbling to witness this moment - after years of hard work, seeing our lab’s first big paper reach over 50K views in a week and being celebrated like this means so much to us.

A study in Nature Human Behaviour shows that directing attention to bodily sensations, rather than away, promotes more regulated acute inflammatory responses in healthy volunteers, revealing sensory and vagal pathways linking mind and immune function. go.nature.com/4x7rUNR #immunosky 🧪
This is figure 2, which shows that sensory signalling contributes to attentional regulation of inflammation.

Cool work showing that directing internal attention to a felt inflammatory experience (but not looking at it) reduces inflammation.. & that this attention may = ⬆️HRV (mindful breathing perhaps?) Seems that pain/sensation is an important part of this attention-seeking process, too #interoception

The goal of a PhD is not to learn some facts or read a few papers or learn a bunch of techniques. The goal of a PhD is to learn independence, problem solving, how to finish things you start, resilience, & gain the ability to adapt & think creatively. Learning these things is hard.
