Hey, ProPublica reporter Jake Pearson here. I’m taking over the account to tell you about my new story. For months, I posed as a problem gambler on DraftKings to test the company's "responsible gaming" safeguards. Spoiler alert: They made me a VIP — and I lost $10K. Here's how it all went down. 🧵

Silent Hill Townfall is tame at first, its opening village chores a little too dry, but once part 4 begins it locks-in on a kind of architectural horror that makes real the implicit hostility and structural violence of pebble-dashed council flats and damp-cornered shopping centres. Powerful stuff.

It's really refreshing seeing shitey normal working class life depicted like this in a game, and a Silent Hill game no less. Pebble-dashed council flats, three-bar fires, Post Office counters, concrete shopping precincts. This must be how posh people felt playing Everybody's Gone to the Rapture.
The inside of a council flat.A brutalist concrete shopping precinct.A block of council flats.A Post Office (well, 'Post Service') counter.

This is what Sheeran should have done and perhaps would have done if he’d grown up Irish. They have so much more to lose than he does, but immediately made the right call at great professional expense. Support for human rights isn’t a political stance, it just requires intelligence and integrity.

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).
A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.

A secret - a quite big one, that nobody talks about - is that you can actually get on more successfully as a writer by befriending these people & networking with them than you can by writing fucking good books. My problem is I don't want to be their friend. I want to write fucking good books.

There are endless avenues to dunk on this image that did the rounds recently. The one that struck me is the absolute fallacy of separating the process of making art from its impact on the audience. The process often is the idea!
AI slop comic that reads: Traditional artists tend to place value on the process of making. AI artists tend to place value on the idea being expressed. One asks, "how was this made?". The other asks, "what does this make you think of feel?". Different focus. Same purpose: Connection.
