I can't believe we've been doing Bullet Points Monthly for a decade, but somehow we have. The site has almost died many times. It continues still through a mix of bullheaded determination and the joy of working with excellent fellow editors and guest writers. bulletpointsmonthly.com/2026/08/19/s...

This iconic panel from Akira only grows in estimation when you learn that Otomo instructed an assistant to cross hatch the black explosion by hand instead of filling it in with ink.
Panel from the manga Akira by Katsuhiro Otomo. It depicts an explosion engulfing Neo Tokyo - the blast at the centre of the image is almost completely black, with some traces of white peeking through due to the cross-hatch technique employed by the artist.

There are endless avenues to dunk on this image that did the rounds recently. The one that struck me is the absolute fallacy of separating the process of making art from its impact on the audience. The process often is the idea!
AI slop comic that reads: Traditional artists tend to place value on the process of making. AI artists tend to place value on the idea being expressed. One asks, "how was this made?". The other asks, "what does this make you think of feel?". Different focus. Same purpose: Connection.

Why "Troglodytes" in Cairn?
All throughout Aava’s ascent of Kami she comes across remnants of a group who bear the misnomer of troglodyte. I share the same distaste for this term that Jay Castello notes in their writing on Cairn...
