A ★ review of Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)

A frenetic tale of two realities, both alike in dysfunction, which immerses the player in servitude and struggle. Here's our Roman Sands Re:Build review: www.eurogamer.net/roman-sands-...
Artwork showing a character from Roman Sands Re:Build in their resort worker uniform against a vaporwave-inspired indoor backdrop of palm trees, spewing fountain water, and distant blue skies. A Eurogamer four star rating badge is in the upper-right corner.

Stoked to have a review of Silent Hill: Townfall by @reidmccarter.bsky.social on Kotaku today! kotaku.com/silent-hill-...
This is indicative of a larger problem. Too much of Townfall is devoted to the externalities of St. Amelia and the machinations of the tragedy that's shaped it, not enough to the emotional and intellectual centers of its characters. As an outline, its plot is a welcome attempt to marry real Scottish history and political concerns with Silent Hill's brand of psychological horror. In execution, it lacks in dramatic heft and engagement with the richest aspects of its setting. This is a game that asks how economic systems shape those who live within them on levels deeper than they might imagine. It asks……levels deeper than they might imagine. It asks how our sense of self is directed by our jobs, and how (or if we can decouple personal and professional responsibility. It wants its player to consider individual and communal
indebtedness within the framework of a cruel world. Simply asking these questions gives Townfall a vibrancy uncommon to big-budget game productions. The thin answers given to these questions, though, are a letdown in proportion to the promise given by posing them in the first place.

Roman Sands RE:Build review: A unique and obliterating blend of resort sim, engineering horror and alchemic ritual
Roman Sands is a brilliantly cracked, witty and imaginative "service industry adventure" that consists of two very different games in a collapsing orbit.

You can have remakes but they have to be made by a completely different studio. Outside of the publisher. Third party. It's an adaptation. They put their own spin on it, like different versions of Solaris or A Star Is Born or something.

FEAR is *the* example. The blandness of each level highlights the before/after of a gun fight. A grey office lobby is now filled with blood and bodies and bullet holes. Remedy's Control went for that sort of thing too, but the hyper detailed visuals make the before/after contrast less compelling

Something about surface shader tech became oddly compelling around 2004, like seeing a polished tile floor reflecting a flashlight beam. The polygonal rendering budgets were still relatively low, so those effects necessarily took place in more austere levels which helped focus the eye toward them

2004/2005/2006. A certain lighting and type of character model that feels to me right in the nexus between real and not real/drawn directly from references but still subjective/dark but vivid/serious, not conservative. Goes well with guns and death.
