New JHM! The July 2026 issue includes an article by a student I taught for whom this was her grade 11 independent research project: scholarship.claremont.edu/jhm/vol16/is... She explored an area of #mathematics called "queueing theory" and wrote all about it in the context of Disney! #iTeachMath ♾️

Yesterday I did a Y9/10 show about game theory. I talked about penalty-taking and how strikers should aim straight more often. Last night 22 penalties were taken in the #WorldCup. Only 12 of them were scored, 4 saved, 6 missed the target! Not one was aimed straight. robeastaway.com/blog/penalty...

I respect teaching it "in the right order" doing CTS first, then deriving from that, but to me it just makes deriving it kind of boring. Same with when we derive the suvat formulae in mechanics. Give them formulas, use them, and when the formulas are familiar, reveal the "magic" of deriving them ✨

Maybe I should start showing them this more often though. I like how the square looks like a little cog wheel that is about to turn. It would be nice to do it with other shapes for some other angles.
