In #MathsToday, I was reminded that the power of "circulating across the classroom" is greatly reduced by the inability to decipher any letter or numbers on the page.

Hence thought of the following: For you teaching in a Sixth Form college, you see students coming from outside which are all new to you so might have a different perspective on this: What are the top 3 maths "gaps" you generally see from students fresh from their GCSEs? #ALevelMaths #Mathstoday

Was doing inequalities on a graph with Y12 in #MathsToday. Realized how "unatural" it is for many students (even top GSCE grades with excellent algebraic skills) to relate "their algebra" to a graphical representation. I need to think more. #AlevelMaths

Last week with Year 12, was good to quickly talk about formal ways (ie not try and substitute) to solve this pair: x^2+y^2=34 xy = 15 (One way being probably "nicer" than another) #MathsToday

Due to the fact that I am quite new to the profession, I have observed quite a few lessons, was made to watch quite a few videos of lessons, and heard a lot of opinions about "good teaching", over the last few years.

Looking at a chat on here where people reported A-Level teaching hours in many different ways, I asked myself the question: "Is teaching 90 minutes 3 times a week more teaching & LEARNING done than 1 hour 9 times fortnightly?" For me, YES. What is your opinion? #MathsToday #ALevelMaths

Sometimes, a feeling of despair to hear, witness (and understand) the logic in schools: "I looked for responsibilities in order to teach less, it was too much, not enough time..." "You do not want responsibilities other than teaching? You will be crammed with teaching hours until you give up"

If you were to plot the curve: x-axis: YEARS OF TEACHING (ie 3 is your third year teaching) y-axis: NUMBER OF TEACHING HOURS THAT YEAR What would it look like? What is the max and min? PS: the y-value is purely about teaching a class (ignore other responsibilities) #MathsToday

Is it really wise to have Y12 Single Maths students (mixed with Further students) be taught a lot of Y13 content, in order to facilitate the Further Maths students (edexcel) Core Pure 1 and 2 delivery (which has to be done in Year 12) ? #ALevelMaths

Just a newbie trying to understand practice accross school/opinions: Alevel maths teaching for one year group (let's say Y12): 1) Do you split Half Pure/Stats & Half Pure/Mech between 2 teachers 2) Do you split Pure & Stats/Mech between 2 teachers 3) Other. Which? #ALevelMaths #MathsToday

Another AI Use witnessed in school: Tutor needs to write end of year form tutor reports for each tutee. Tutor leaves long vocal note to AI for each student. AI comes back with a couple of paragraphs. Copy/paste paragraphs after quick check. #MathsToday

Before going to bed, I will leave with the bombshell and very controversial opinion that I absolutely hate the notation df/dx for derivative of f. In my students days, I would see it as a physicist notation, unworthy (🫢) of the mathematician notation f'

Is is normal to have the end of June and all of July taken out by a flurry (not just one) of trips or activities such as "fun days", in schools? #Mathstoday Too much. It might sound crazy, but I'd rather teach and finish whatever students need to finish studying.

The theorem that was taught to me, many moons ago, and is still taught today to all Year 7 students in France, called Thales theorem (proportionality in triangle) is not called Thales theorem in the UK, but the basic proportionality theorem? Is that correct? Help #MathsToday

In #MathsToday we looked at flow/depth problems with Year 9. I give you a depth/time graph and on your MWB you must sketch a corresponding 3D shape... When we spot an erroneous shape amongst the MWBs we reverse the question and class must draw a graph corresponding to that particular 3D shape.

Love Maths, but not always in tune with what are commonly called "puzzles". Sometimes feel "puzzles" look down on you while I like Maths which look straight at you. Therefore am a fraud? Maybe.

Remind me again why National Exams are given by different "awarding bodies" (some private), hence giving students slightly different tests, having slighly different ways of doing things, with teachers having slighly different ways to prepare students for them...?

Why is a lot of "classic" American authors from late last century, and American litterature in general, so hard to find in bookshops in UK? A bit of McCarthy and DeLillo, that's it? Jim Harrison and Tom Wolfe might not be to everyone's taste, but 0 book in most london bookshops, really ??

I read an exchange once (can't find) between A-Level maths teachers, regarding the sequencing of Stats in the Pearsons textbooks, how it was not great and how some used a different order in practice... If that rings a bell, I d be grateful to get your opinion on it. #Alevelmaths #MathsToday

Planning on stealing and trying a lesson from a Japanese teacher with some Year 9...as seen in Colin Foster's paper.. #MathsToday

The use of carefully planned board work to support the productive discussion of multiple student responses in a Japanese problem-solving lesson
In this paper, we analyse a Grade 8 (age 13-14) Japanese problem-solving lesson involving angles associated with parallel lines, taught by a highly-regarded, expert Japanese mathematics teacher. The focus of our observation was on how the teacher used carefully-planned board-work to support a rich and extensive plenary discussion (neriage) in which he shifted the focus from individual mathematical solutions to generalised properties. By comparing the teacher’s detailed prior planning of the board-work (bansho) with that which he produced during the lesson, we distinguish between aspects of the lesson that he considered essential and those he treated as contingent. Our analysis reveals how the careful planning of the board-work enabled the teacher to be free to explore with the students the multiple alternative solution methods that they had produced, while at the same time having a clear overall purpose relating to how angle properties can be used to find additional solution methods. We outline how these findings from within the strong tradition of the Japanese problem-solving lesson might inform research and teaching practice outside of Japan, where a deep heritage of bansho and neriage are not present. In particular, we highlight three prominent features of this teacher’s practice: the detailed lesson planning in which particular solutions were prioritised for discussion; the considerable amount of time given over to student generation and comparison of alternative solutions; and the ways in which the teacher’s use of the board was seen to support the richness of the mathematical discussions.

Question asked on board to Year 10s: A=B C=D From this, create as many equalities as you can. Got some nice answers and some to discuss (eg can we really write sqr(A)=sqr(B) for sure?). To be fair, was already happy to see some do A+D=B+C, as opposed to just A+C=B+D. #mathstoday

Was thinking of giving this to Year 10 soon to sum up what they have seen in trigonometry. Goal: Find as many ways as possible to solve. One exact solution needed. Could be turned into a more or less rigorous exercise with bounds as well. #MathsToday Improvised hashtag: #HowManyMathsWays
Find y in as many ways as possible.
