Also well-being posters telling us to take breaks, get sleep, spend time doing what we enjoy etc don’t help. Workload needs to be manageable so we can actually do these things.

I taught this yesterday, I am a big fan of the grid method but I show them both and let them choose what they prefer. I give them the choice because it seems like their preference depends on how they have been taught division, multiplication or factorising in previous years.

In #mathstoday yr 2 #Alevelmaths did @jamiewoodmaths.bsky.social’s order of transformations walk through, yr 1 looked at simultaneous equations and quadratic inequalities including @mathsjem.bsky.social’s spot the mistake. Grateful for teachers creating and sharing great resources. (Links below)

Well yes probably wishful thinking, I did also download the entire gcse worksheets. They are so useful in FE.

I just tell my students to use the old site. I hope it stays free always as it says at the top. As far as I can see the AI tutor just marks the work, can’t see anything to actually help explain it to students if they get it wrong.

From a parent perspective I am inclined to agree, seems to just result in the school communicating via multiple different channels (whatsapp, an app, email) but many parents only relying on the whatsapp

Thanks both, I’ll get them to try it as a starter for next lesson. This got me thinking, is there something somewhere showing the frequency at which different topics have come up for AQA? Probably spent a bit too long on modulus graphs this week!

In #mathstoday #Alevelmaths yr 1 did hidden quadratics and filled in the blanks with this resource from Swinton maths, yr 2 found intersections of modulus graphs mostly adapting examples taken from the dr frost slides - my new A3 MWBs, fine tip pens and board rubbers got lots of use 😀

I didn’t mention squaring all lesson but one student still asked, glad I could blame the advice of my experienced teacher friends 😂

Hannah @neechmaths.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
I haven’t seen this on AQA, does anyone know? I ran out of time today so missed this type out but will come back to it if needed. @ecrmaths.bsky.social @blatherwicksam.bsky.social do you know if AQA ever ask this?

Thanks all, teaching it this afternoon and you’ve all really helped me clarify my thought so I can teach it better.

I’m loving my 2nd year teaching yr 1 A level! Just knowing I have my lessons from last year to fall back on makes it so much easier to adapt to my group and try out different teaching approaches 😊 Yr 2 on the other hand…bit of a steep learning curve!

Hannah @neechmaths.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
So if a student asks why can’t I just square both sides, what would you say?
200
Hannah @neechmaths.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
I’m guessing you won’t like this AQA mark scheme listing squaring as first possible approach
200
Hannah @neechmaths.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
I was inclined to think this also, but I’m not sure I’m 100% clear on my reasoning for not squaring
100
Hannah @neechmaths.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
do they have to entirely cross out original sketch or are they allowed to leave it as a dotted line?
100
Hannah @neechmaths.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
I think I’m 4b) I would not use the squaring approach given we already have the graph anyway. I was thinking we draw the graphs and identify the intersection points then look to see whether each intersection point is in the reflected or reflected part of each to set up equations to solve

AQA, I suppose having looked at spec in more detail it does actually imply that it would be in the context of finding intersections of graphs rather than purely algebraic, now developing a dislike for our textbook on this topic which presents many Qs as purely algebraic equations 🤔

#AlevelMaths - any recommendations on resources or tips for teaching modulus equations? Must admit I’m a little rusty and want to make sure I am clear. Any advice other than always sketch the graph or if squaring check the solutions in original equation?

In #MathsToday Yr 1 #AlevelMaths proved the quadratic formula using an underground maths card sort, did some explorative work on key features of quadratic functions using factorised form and completing the square and then completed DrAustin finding quadratic equations from their graphs. Links below

In #MathsToday Yr 2 #AlevelMaths explored modulus functions using this MEI desmos activity. Some good discussions were had and they surprised themselves with how much they could work out. When the lesson ended and they hadn’t quite finished a student told me it was fun and he didn’t want to stop 😀

Let me know how it goes. I was thinking of using this but had been hoping to find something that covers af(x)+b as well.
100
Hannah @neechmaths.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
So is the idea that you show the red graph and hide the blue graph, pick a value for a and b, ask them where they think the point will be transformed to and then reveal blue graph to check if they were correct?

Hannah @neechmaths.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Yes I am aware, I was thinking I would still want them to work out that the order doesn’t matter and why. I was meaning the order within each of those.

Yep! (I work in FE)

Hannah @neechmaths.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Thanks all, just to clarify I am looking for something for teaching multiple transformations of a function: f(x+a)+b or af(x)+b (or both).Think I may just keep it simple and get them to pick a function f(x) and try a few out and see if they can explain what order they should do the transformations.

This inspired me to make something with claude about transformations of the form f(ax+b) Have a play with it here: jammyix.github.io/orderoftrans... (well aware there are many similar versions of this about online with desmos etc, but wanted to see what claude could do)

In #mathstoday yr 1 #alevelmaths did so well with Ab-surd! from underground maths. Didn’t really feel like I had to teach them much, they worked it all out themselves through some great discussions. Yr 2 did some textbook practice on functions, a simple lesson, but very much needed for this group.

Thanks, a very similar question to (1) is in the extension for the underground maths Ab-surd task I plan to do with year 12 tomorrow, now I have a couple more for them to try if they manage that.

In #mathstoday worked on non calculator skills with my higher gcse resitters, rapidly concluding that the mixed ability nature of this group will be the biggest challenge this year, really need to rethink my approach 🤔

It seems I have a similar approach to my to do lists as laptops, new daily to do list - anything not done the previous day goes onto the next days list at the end of the day.

Close them, once I get to about 20 it makes me panicked and I feel the need to shut them all down and start again

Every day, but I don’t use laptop for teaching, it mostly stays at my desk in our office plugged in so I shut it down to save on electricity.

This is in an FE college, they run a higher gcse programme aimed at students who already have 4 or 5 with the view to aiming for higher grades to study at level 3.
