It's too easy to call this cluster timely. Indeed, what they show is that feigned surprise at Epstein's sordid associations with prominent university men is designed to disguise continuity as aberration. edited by @kwazana.bsky.social & @tavia.bsky.social socialtextjournal.org/periscope_to...

This "4 years after college, 20-somethings are poor, because they're 20-somethings &/or in grad school" is so blindingly obvious, the only way to understand why one would use this metric to gauge the worth of majors or the quality of universities is "epic bad faith." There is no other explanation.

I think the Leverhulme research fellowship can work this way. It's just one year though and unis aren't that keen to support it as there is little opportunity for the centre to skim income from it

Andy Burnham's proposals are sadly incoherent. It's unpopular to say this. But you cannot want a National Care Service and an end to rough sleeping while making huge, detrimental changes to the immigration system. The Earned Settlement proposals need to be scrapped. Sign our petition.

The “literacies“ framework is as intellectually bankrupt as polarization right now. We will keep using it because when you’ve got one hammer and the NSF social science funding has dried up everything looks like a nostalgic managerial class nail.

"There is a bright, clear line that connects the rhetoric of a university president who degrades the intelligence of his own women students with his participation in Epstein’s world; it is the same line that connects a university that funds its coffers from the donations of a sexual predator while keeping its gender and sexualities studies program on a shoestring budget. (Those lines are a warning, as well, that such a place also produced the men who cavorted with Epstein, for who among the Epstein class can be counted as Harvard alumni?) Suppressing the rigorous interdisciplinary study of gender and sexuality—which includes the interrogation of the cultural tolerance for violence against women—is precisely what fuels this kind of sexual predation and allows it to not only pass for normal male behavior but to be institutionally rewarded."

The frequency of campus rapes, & their role in getting women to drop out of college, could be regarded as a 2nd stage in a process that starts by making it nearly twice as hard for qualified women to gain university admission compared to men. Excluding women from upward mobility is a policy choice.
Guardian headline about Japanese medical schools falsifying women applicants' test scores to avoid having to admit them.

This is sexual violence as a form of terrorism. It is political violence and it is chilling and horrific, and AOC was absolutely right to be terrified that the goons (now pardoned) laying siege to the capital would rape her if they found her. Small changes won't fix this. FLIP THE TABLE NOW

“UChicago’s national ranking for selectivity, currently No. 4, depends crucially on its rejecting so many women. Its selectivity of men alone would drop it out of the top 10. By contrast, Chicago’s selectivity for women alone would place it in the first position in the country.”

Hello Bone Colleagues,
I have invented a new type of ankle and I'm very excited to show it to you. Early raccoon trials suggest a 60% increase in scurrying speed and dramatic increases in fine motor banditry. I know we are not supposed to create super raccoons, but I think you'll change your mind and professional ethics when you see how cute they are. I believe we are on the cusp of a new era in advanced human scurrying because if medical science has taught me anything, it's that improvements in raccoons correspond 1:1 to improvements in humans.

Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.

I'm sick of saying this but every arts, language and music department that closes denies pupils a future choice. As is said here, languages in particular can be taken with other subjects. Every week my own daughter's options narrow. Why teach languages at all if they cant be taken further?
