RN ship losses @rnshiplosses.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
23 Sept 1779 // The Battle of Flamborough Head, off the Yorkshire coast: two Royal Navy ships, HMS Serapis (44 guns) and HMS Countess of Scarborough (22 guns) were captured when a squadron of four American warships under John Paul Jones attacked the convoy from the Baltic which they were escorting .
Richard Paton, 'The Action Between the Frigates Bonhomme Richard (Capt John Paul Jones) And HMS Serapis, During The Battle Of Flamborough Head, 1779. The Alliance fires on the combatants' (1780). Wikimedia Commons. A painting showing a battle between sailing warships. Two ships are locked in combat in the centre foreground while a third ship on the right fires into the stern of the nearest ship. More ships engaged in combat can be seen on the left, and the coast is visible in the background. Everything is taking place under a turbulent sky, and there are pieces of debris floating in the foreground.

🧵On May 6th, 1756, King George II received official confirmation from the Mediterranean that French transports landed 15,000 troops at Citadella, Minorca, on 18 April. That info was leaked to the press that day, likely by the 2nd Viscount Duncannon, William Ponsonby. #NavalHistory

"The French occupation of Egypt shows the limits of British sea power" is an absolutely wild take. Even ignoring what the Battle of Aboukit Bay did to Napoleon's ability to resupply (hint: nothing good), the defeat at Acre was aided by Sydney Smith intercepting and stealing his artillery. At sea.

HMS Calypso, a 16-gun sloop built in 1783, shown in bad weather among ships of a convoy in a hand-coloured engraving, undated but probably early 19th century. National Maritime Museum image: PAF7972. A coloured depiction of a small three-masted warship in distress in bad weather: her sails and rigging are being violently torn by the wind, and her mizzen mast has been swept away. We can see the starboard side of the ship, and her decks as she rolls in the waves. Other vessels can be seen in the background, also being tossed violently by the huge waves.
