In 2022 a thread appeared on the Glasgow sub-reddit, in which a user enquired why the Buchannan Street underground station on the city's subway system always smelled of farts. They added that they were:

Not sure if it is piped in, or if they employ someone to keep it topped up, but it's always the same brand.

A variety of explanations followed from helpful users. Perhaps riffing on Charles Babbage's 1837 claim that the ‘air itself is one vast library’ of all that humans have said and done, one respondent suggested that:

I’m pretty sure they are left over from the original builders. 19th century diets produced farts that were slightly heavier than air so they’ve never made their way to the surface and just get pulled around the tunnels in the slipstreams from the trains.

The conference will be hosted online via MS Teams. Papers from postgraduate researchers and ECRs are particularly welcome.
