it's not hyperbolic to say that if the ways you talk and think about disabled/sick people (as well as the COVID precautions we may take) are indistinguishable from how fascists talk about disabled/sick people—even down to the same statements—then you have a fucking problem.

The truth is, you can belittle maskers, shrug off disabled people, and call us all crazy a million times, but you’re going to have to live in the world you’re building with these choices, and outcomes don’t care that your views are popular right now. www.cidrap.umn.edu/covid-19/mor...

Really? People still haven't processed that death is not the only possible negative outcome from a Covid infection? Many ableists are going to learn some hard lessons in the years to come - and will see if they have people in their lives who are willing to continue to give a shit about them then.

Governments everywhere declared the pandemic over without cleaning indoor air, public health didn't explain how COVID spreads or the long term risks of infection (+ reinfections), we’ve all been forced back to normal (but with covid in the air) and large accounts here are dunking on people

another thing that hurts my heart is how much people who still mask do to understand why both strangers and loved ones feel the way they do about masking—or lack thereof—but there is rarely such curiosity the other direction, but rather, more often, almost a simmering contempt.

keeping kids safe from infection should matter to you, thus the tools that achieve this—from vaccines to air cleaning tech—should also matter. if you care about vaccines, fight for them; in the meantime, mask up, open a window, & crank up those air purifiers—the virus doesn’t care about bureaucracy.

Manwë told me Melkor keeps harrying the Firstborn of Ilúvatar so I asked how many Elves he has and he said he just goes to Middle-Earth and invites more Elves on the Great Journey so I said it sounds like he’s just feeding the Quendi to Morgoth and then Nienna started crying.

re: AI extinction (from Why We Fear AI) It turns out that looking first at an earlier transition is strikingly illuminating about many properties of the current historic moment. That transition, with its then-brand-spanking-new technology created a surprisingly similar media flurry.

You don't owe anyone (friend, genre, scene, yourself, etc) your taste in music by the way. Big mistake I made when I was younger was to only to listen to things that served an image or a social position. Your musical taste should be free, as limited and as open as you want it to be.

After decades of being told "there is no alternative" that any idea of a world without inequality, scarcity, and hardship was the most dangerous utopia idea, we are now being sold that same idea repackaged as the future AI will bring.

It’s important to be clear that the truth value of a subject does not become debatable just because somebody wants to debate. Ether. Wandering wombs. Devils in red heads, the cursed left handed. Flat earth. Phrenology. Humors. Race science. “Debate me bro!” It’s fine for the answer to be: no.

An editor from the economist telling @olivia.science that nobody confidently understands the difference between the human cognitive capacity for language and a corpus. Idk about you, but to me (as a linguist and cognitive scientist) this is absolutely hilarious
Olivia Guest, quoting Dr Katie Twomey: exactly 💯 on LLMs: they simulate the output we call language, not the cognitive capacity we call language!

Followed by Economist Editor Matt Steinglass saying "I am not sure that I or anyone else confidently understands the difference between those."

The point isn't to produce essays, it's to teach students how to think for fuck's sake. The minute you automate that, it's over. You might as well close the course. Which they're also doing. This is an attack on learning, and everyone is just shrugging.

ID: Collage graphic with two dark silhouettes, one of a young man and one of a young woman, against a background photo of a school hallway, with linoleum walls and red lockers on either side of the image. The text reads, “The Sick Times. The (sick) kids aren’t alright: Observations from a teacher with Long COVID. We must help students by addressing Long COVID and advocating for clean air in schools. By Flynn Lovelace.” If we want kids to have the opportunity to learn, to grow, to be, then we must do what we can to keep them alive and well. To quote Madeline Lane-McKinley from her book Solidarity with Children, “We cannot allow ourselves or each other to surrender the future.”
