Something AI is responsible for that doesn't get enough talk: How, when it scrapes a website to illegally steal everything on it, it uses up a ton of its bandwidth allotment, crashing it or racking up massive fees for site owners.

ICE Has Been Dumping Protester Photos Into a Palantir Database
DHS agents not only tracked and intimidated people observing ICE activity in Maine, but stored information about them in a Palantir-built database, newly unsealed court filings say.

“It’s not ALL men.” None of the 50+ men the Cornell rapists invited to come join them in raping a woman they’d drugged went to the authorities or tried to stop it. Not all men would rape an unconscious woman, but where are the men who’d try to stop it, or EVEN FUCKING OBJECT?

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

If, as seems to be the majority view here, you dislike the prospect of a world where human journalism and analysis is displaced by AI slop, have the self-awareness not to act annoyed and offended that the human labor of writing sometimes requires compensation.

Happy 72nd Birthday to Ruby Bridges, who at the age of 6 desegregated the New Orleans public schools. She’s younger than 30 senators and our last two presidents—and only 7 years older than Barack Obama. The past isn’t past.

You might be like, how do you know the phone people weren't reading on their phones!? Well, I know because in 2016ish society/Apple collectively decided to abandon basic courtesy/headphones, so now every ride is a cacophony of competing TLs turned up to 11.

I really noticed how much my friendships had slipped into app-dependency when I yeeted IG earlier this year. I'm 100% to blame for letting apps bodysnatch "keeping in touch," but now when I try to get folks on board for actual calls, it's like I've suggested we give up soap or something.

While I'm def guilty of scheduling calls, it's because I've been juggling 3+ "PT" jobs for years. I miss talking to my friends and I'm exhausted of having like 90% of my relationships conducted over gchat/text (and then having them thematically fed back to me in ads). www.thecut.com/article/i-sh...?

Fourteen years ago, HBO's 'The Newsroom' laid out the truth about voter ID in this segment. It’s striking how little the arguments — or the tactics — have changed. Still a solution in search of a problem. History doesn’t repeat itself — it gets rerun.

We are told to endlessly save so that when we retire and move towards the disabilities that come with age, we will be able to pay for the right to continue existing without pain. Denying a ramp to someone with a mobility issue = pain and exhaustion of having to walk until they find a ramp.

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo called Houston home for 35 years. On Tuesday, an ICE agent shot and killed him. His family learned of his death from a video before anyone bothered to knock on their door.
New York City stands with the Salgado family in demanding a full, independent investigation and real accountability. To the Salgado family and any immigrant family in this city living in fear: we grieve with you and we will continue to stand beside you in the pursuit of justice.
Abolish ICE.
