But collectively, the narrow focus on grants to universities is misguided, especially when one accounts for the balance of where the money actually goes (source: NCSES). A plurality of federal R&D funding goes to businesses, followed by internal R&D expenditure, followed by higher education.

this is lying with statistics in 3+ ways. 1. y-axis crime 2. we have more recalls at this point in the year than we’ve had in recent years 3. recall counts aren’t very helpful measures because they don’t tell you anything about things like scale or health outcomes and severity.

This article reminded me of the texts I received during the 2024 election containing my address saying “records suggest you haven’t voted yet,” which I found creepy. They came from MaxVote/AllVote, which are linked to Movement Labs, which is linked to… one of the PACs named in this article.

If we focus on new faculty hires in the "DEI era", a trend emerges: general hiring dropped due to pandemic hiring freezes, but minority hiring remained stable or slightly increased. The outcome: ~160 minority faculty/year over the counterfactual. So about 1 person per campus.
